Pickoff Moves, Get Me To The Park On Time Edition
Prelude
I was trying to work up the energy to do a midseason preview on the Angels; if it doesn't happen by Sunday, it won't, because we still have company over through midweek. Still trying to put the finishing touches on the minor league scorebook crawler.Yankees Drop Ultimatum On A-Rod
Via BTF, New York's Newsday reports that the Yankees have issued an ultimatum to A-Rod: sign an extension before his opt-out clause kicks in 10 days after the conclusion of the World Series, or the Yankees won't bid on him in the offseason. Presumably this would leave the Angels, Cubs, Red Sox, and Dodgers as the leading contenders to get him. Angels' owner Arte Moreno is already on record about a "ceiling economically" on players, and the Dodgers have explicitly walked away from two Boras clients, Luke Hochevar and J.D. Drew. That would leave the Red Sox (for which reason I'm skeptical that the Yankees are serious) and the Cubs, about which, more in a moment.Mark Cuban Announces Intention To Buy Cubs
Another one from BTF, Mark Cuban has announced his intentions to buy the Cubs, but MLB may not want him. Word is he's detested by White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who has some pull with the other owners, and worse, he has a track record of publicly criticizing fellow team owners from his time in the NBA. Cubs ownership as currently constituted with Tribco probably wouldn't make a run at A-Rod, but under Cuban...?Roster Notes
- Rotoworld says Justin Speier's velocity isn't up to snuff, and he could take a while before resuming 7th inning duties.
- Chris Resop was placed on the 15-day DL.
- Mike Napoli should also return earlier than expected, with the good news that his ankle, earlier diagnosed with a "high" sprain following a game-ending collision, wasn't as bad as feared. Napoli thinks he'll be activated Tuesday.
- Jake Peavy had his first start moved back after the All-Star game, following biceps soreness.
- Giants GM Brian Sabean has re-signed for two years.
- Sorry, Glaus lovers: J.P. Ricciardi isn't interested in trading him.
