Minor League Scorebook
News
- Stephen Smith reminds us of the importance of checking primary sources; Jon Bachanov is not represented by Scott Boras, but by the Beverly Hills Sports Council, according to a June 7 story in the North [San Diego] County Times.
- Cedar Rapids has placed RHP Aaron Cook on the DL with strep throat, and it is likely he will have his tonsils removed. Bobby Cassevah moved up from Orem, and C Scott Knazek moves down to the AZL Angels.
- The Great Lakes Loons placed Eduardo Perez on the suspended list and replaced him with utility man Parker Brooks.
Scores
Meanwhile, back in the land where the games mean nothing, or little... a land where Ervin Santana could be king ...
Brown: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Gorneault: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Evans: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Eylward: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wilson: 0-4
Olenberger: (L, 8-4), 5.1 IP, 9 R, 9 ER, 12 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.55 ERA
Shell: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 5.71 ERA
Terry Evans busted out of a July slump in a big way with a 2-for-4 night that included a solo homer, the first of consecutive first-inning jacks against the Rainiers (Mike Eylward's was the second one). Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as Tacoma picked up seven runs in the sixth for the win. Kasey Olenberger took almost all the damage and the loss.
Sandoval, F: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 1-6, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Duff: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K
Smith, Co: 3-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Collins: 1-1
Green: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 4.28 ERA
Hunter: (BS, 2), 0.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 5.51 ERA
Pullin: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.08 ERA
Stertzbach: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1.50 ERA
Freddy Sandoval's three-run, tenth inning jack won the game for the Travs. It unfortunately came too late for Nick Green, who got shafted with a no-decision despite pitching six innings of two-run ball. Coby Smith also had a three-run homer. Von Sterzbach got his first Texas League win of the year in his fifth appearance; it's his second time through AA, having missed 2006.
Statia: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Pettit: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Infante: 2-5, 1 RBI
Reilly: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Schoeninger: (W, 3-1), 7.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.97 ERA
Jepsen: (S, 3), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 3.22 ERA
Tim Schoeninger made his most impressive outing to date in the Cal League, coming within four outs of a complete game while striking out eight and giving up only a solo homer. Hainley Statia had his second four-hit game of the year, and Patrick Reilly homered and drove in two. Kevin Jepsen earned a 1.1 IP save thanks to Schoeninger's bequeathed two-out baserunner in the eighth.
Phillips: 0-4, 2 K
Trumbo: 2-5, 2 K
Nieves: 0-2, 2 BB
Diaz: (L, 1-2), 3.0 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 9 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 5.89 ERA
Arredondo: 4.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.31 ERA
Brossman: 2-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Gronkowski: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Giovanatto: 2-4, 1 BB
Walden: 2.2 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 7.58 ERA
Schlecker: 1.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 6.00 ERA
Chambers: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Brasier: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 2.61 ERA
The Owlz' skid reached five straight, as Great Falls started off with a 9-0 lead mainly on an eight-run third that saw 12 White Sox come to the plate; Orem tied the game in the eight with consecutive three-run innings in the seventh and eighth, but Great Falls posted a single run on a scoring groundout in the eighth.
Reliever Brian Chambers made his first Pioneer League appearance after a promotion from the AZL, giving up an unearned run and striking out two. Ryan Brasier took the loss.
Knazek: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Perez, D: 0-2, 2 BB
Flores: (L, 0-1), 3.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 5.00 ERA
Calderon: 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 4.00 ERA
What does a guy have to do to get some respect around here? Scott Knazek managed a five-game hitting streak at Cedar Rapids, and then found himself demoted two levels to the complex leagues; presumably, this is part of a chain reaction that will ultimately end up with Mike Napoli being reinstated to his starting job in Anaheim.
Hu, C: 3-3, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Young: 1-4, 1 K
LaRoche: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Hoorelbeke: 0-1
Wright: 0-1, 1 K
Pollok: 3.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 4.65 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (W, 3-3) (in relief), 2.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 5.29 ERA
Bauer: 1.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 7.56 ERA
Wright: (H, 1), 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 5.19 ERA
Hull: (S, 8), 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.24 ERA
Factoid: Chin-Lung Hu has had two or more hits in all but one appearance with the Las Vegas 51's; he's got a .538/.556/1.000 line so far there (I love small sample sizes!). In today's game, he went 3-for-3 with a two-run triple. Andy LaRoche homered, his fourth in as many games, and extending a little hitting streak to four games; he has an on-base streak that dates back to June 9.
Portland only got back into this game late, as the 51's took a 4-2 lead in the first and never looked back. What's amazing is that the 51's won this game with five pitchers, four of whom had 4.65 ERAs or worse. It looks like this may have been a planned tandem start as Dwayne Pollok got only his second start of the season and went only three innings; I'm assuming Las Vegas is short on starters at the moment.
Tomlin: 2-4, 2 RBI
Dewitt: 1-4
Raglani: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Gonzalez, J: 2-4
Dunlap: 0-0, 1 BB
Norrito: (L, 6-1), 4.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.58 ERA
Alexander: 1.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 5.01 ERA
De Jesus: 0-2, 1 K
Justis: 2-2
Lopez: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Castillo, J: (L, 3-7), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 10 H, 8 K, 0 BB, 4.34 ERA
Jesus Castillo may have taken the loss, but the real lumps in this game were taken by Francisco Felix, who gave up five runs over an inning and a third, including Pat Reilly's two-run jack in the eighth.
Peterson: 2-5, 1 K
Bell: 4-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Berezay: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Mattingly: 0-3, 1 RBI
Adkins: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Coleman: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 4.0 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 10 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 5.87 ERA
Malone: 2.1 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.27 ERA
Melgarejo: 1.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.45 ERA
A very impressive night for Josh Bell, who clocked a pair of homers, went 4-for-5, and drove in four runs. The pitching wasn't nearly as good, as reliever Paul Coleman gave up six runs, two unearned. Lefty James Adkins made his second professional start and lasted one inning.
Garabedian: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Taloa: 3-5, 2 K
Vetters: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Gardner: (L, 2-3), 5.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 8 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.63 ERA
Keltavious Jones (what a great baseball name!) had three hits against visiting Ogden pitching on the way to beating the Raptors 7-4. Brandon Vetters went 3-for-4 and missed hitting for the cycle by a triple, smacking his second homer in as many games and his fourth for the season. Starter Michael Gardner was one run and one out away from a quality start.
Orr: 2-3, 1 RBI
Martin: 2-3, 1 RBI
Contreras: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.13 ERA
Santiago: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.75 ERA
Paredes: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.48 ERA
There's likely a bug here: almost always seven-inning games are a product of a rescheduled suspended game, but so far I can't find the matching game.
from wiki - In 1987, during a fund raising drive, Roberts announced to a television audience that unless he raised $8 million by that March, God would "call him home" (a euphemism for death)
stephen has good insight, but daily he seems to think he has to demonstrate his arrogance and superiority as a fan, instead of just writing about baseball.
btw, Ervin's on the way to AAA and Nap has been activated.
