Brown: 2-6, 1 2B, 2 K
Gorneault: 3-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Evans: 2-6, 1 RBI
Eylward: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB
Porter: 2-6, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Wilson: 0-5, 1 K
Smith, Ca: 2-5, 1 K
Bulger: 2.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 3.99 ERA
Thompson: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.59 ERA
Well, considering the Angels have pissed away an eight-game division lead, and managed to lose a series for a second time to one of the worst teams in the league, this one was pretty hilarious as tonics go. The Bees got a win thanks to Mike Eylward having a career night at the plate that included a grand slam, driving in six overall, and scoring the go-ahead run from second on pinch-hitter Curtis Pride's sac fly. The sweetest part was the fielding error by Mariners' top prospect Adam Jones, so the winning run was unearned — as were six of the Bees' tallies, thanks to four errors by Tacoma gloves.
Anyway, Jason Bulger pitched a good couple of innings here, and Rich Thompson got the win in relief. Bobby Bonilla basically stank the place up, surrendering eight runs through five innings.
Sandoval, F: 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Rodriguez, S: 3-5, 1 2B
Collins: 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Adenhart: (W, 7-3), 6.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 9 K, 2 BB, 3.36 ERA
O'Day: (S, 2), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.27 ERA
Nick Adenhart's first win in exactly a month, and certainly his highest single-game strikeout total to date as well, with nine. Adenhart had a shutout going through six, but he unraveled a bit in the seventh, giving up consecutive one-out singles to Adam Donachie, Onil Joseph, Valentino Arce, and Adam Greenberg, magnified by a Brad Coon error in center that allowed Joseph to score.
Darren O'Day recovered nicely from his blown save the other day to notch his third save for Arkansas.
The Travs got homers off the bats of Michael Collins, Adam Morrissey, and Freddie Sandoval.
Statia: 3-6, 2 RBI, 2 K
Pettit: 1-2, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 1 K
Johnson: 3-6, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Renz: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K
Remole: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Toussaint: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 BB
Mattison: (BS, 5), 1.0 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.54 ERA
Incinelli: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.30 ERA
One crazy game with lots of scoring on both sides and crooked numbers in six frames between the two. Rancho came up big in the end with a seven-run eighth that included homers off the bats of Jordan Renz (a leadoff solo shot), Christopher Pettit (a three-run jack), and Ben Johnson (a solo shot immediately following Pettit's).
Tim Mattison gave up five runs in relief in only one inning of work, the third time this year he's done that for his fifth blown save of the season. Dan Incinelli vultured the win, as Anthony Ortega left the game after five.
For the 66ers, Jacobo Meque, who recently posted a stretch of being scored upon in only one of twelve games, took a blown save and the loss. Starter Marlon Arias didn't last five.
Trumbo: 0-5
Walker: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Nieves: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Perez: 2-3, 1 RBI
Rosario: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Herndon: (L, 8-6), 5.0 IP, 5 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.19 ERA
Not Kenneth but David Herndon who took this loss; two of the runs against were unearned thanks to a pair of errors by shortstop P.J. Phillips. Dayton led all the way, starting with a two-run second. The sloppy play extended to both sides, as the Kernels committed four errors and Dayton three, though none of Dayton's resulted in runs.
Loman: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 BB
Castillo: 2-4, 1 2B, 3 RBI
Mann: 2-4, 2 RBI
Knazek: 2-4, 1 K
Perez, D: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Tobin: 4.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.88 ERA
Page: (W, 3-0) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.20 ERA
McKiernan: (S, 1), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.70 ERA
Peter Bourjos continued his rehab stint at Tempe in this game, going 1-for-3 with a triple as the starting centerfielder. Three of the Angels' seven runs were driven in by Angel Castillo, who doubled in a pair in the fourth. Eddie McKiernan got his first save of the year in his eighth appearance.
Lindsey: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
LaRoche: 1-4, 1 K
Barnes: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Young: 0-1, 1 K
Juarez: 6.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 8 K, 3 BB, 5.58 ERA
Riley: (W, 4-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 7.76 ERA
Hull: (S, 9), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.18 ERA
Portland and Las Vegas traded three-spots in the second inning. Portland then went ahead in the top of the sixth with three consecutive singles from Peter Ciofrone, Royce Huffman, and Yordany Ramirez. The 51's were able to do them one better in the bottom of the eighth, when John Lindsey and Larry Barnes both homered to give Las Vegas the lead for good. Eric Hull came in to get the save, his ninth, dancing around two hits and a walk.
Incidentally, Lindsey has gone hitless in exactly three games since he started playing for Las Vegas.
Gonzalez, J: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Dunlap: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Concepcion: 0-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Raglani: 0-1, 4 BB, 1 K
Tomlin: 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Nicholson: 2-5
Miller: 0-1, 1 K
McDonald: (W, 2-0), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 0.82 ERA
Miller: 2.1 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 4.76 ERA
Meloan: (S, 19), 1.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 2.18 ERA
James McDonald got his third win in his last five starts, despite failing to do anything about his seeming inability to get past the fifth. Greg Miller went two and a third innings, giving up three runs, two unearned thanks to errors by third baseman Albert Concepcion, Jr. and second baseman David Nicholson.
Xavier Paul homered, a two-run shot in the second, and catcher A.J. Ellis drove in a pair in the third on a double.
Hunt: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
May: 3-4, 1 K
Godwin: 2-4
Arias, M: 4.0 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 5.55 ERA
Pratt: 1.1 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 5 BB, 6.09 ERA
Meque: (BS, 2)(L, 4-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.57 ERA
Orr: 2-4
Jacobs: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Withrow: 1.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 9.00 ERA
Dutton: 4.1 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 4.33 ERA
Miller: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Perez, E: (S, 3), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.00 ERA
Starter Christopher Withrow didn't make it out of the second, taking a four-run beating, partly due to his replacement, Jonathan Dutton, who immediately surrendered a bases-loaded walk to D'Marcus Ingram, and hit Guillermo Toribio to drive in another. Compounding things, he surrendered a grand slam to Edgar Lara to cap a seven-run second. The Dodgers crawled back with a four-run fourth that included Franklin Jacobs' first homer, a three run jack, and won it in the eighth on Keyter Collado's RBI double.
