Minor League Scorebook
News
- As expected, "fringe player" Jeff Kennard (a guy with a "pulse and a fastball") was assigned to AA Arkansas.
- I should mention Steven Smith's recent posts about the Arizona League relating games on Friday and Saturday. Hank Conger, Peter Bourjos, and Ryan Mount were all back in the lineup on Saturday on rehab stints from their respective injuries. He's also got an interview (RealPlayer required) with recent draftee Jon Bachanov. Apparently, the Devil Rays scout told Bachanov that the team intended to take him with the first pick of the second round, but Bachanov got wind of this from a Devil Rays scout, and told Tom Kotchman. (The Angels drafted Bachanov with their first-round supplemental round pick.)
- I somehow missed this when Justin Speier was called up, but Chris Resop was placed on the 15-day DL to make room for him. He's expected to make a rehab appearance some time this week.
- Howie Kendrick will undergo additional X-rays on his broken left finger.
- Takashi Saito's pain is
going down, though, yipes:
"It's similar to what I felt when I had herniated disks, so I'm thinking it could be related to that," Saito said.
Scores
Evans: 1-4, 2 K
Eylward: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Smith, Ca: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Patchett: 0-1, 2 BB
Gorneault: 0-1
Liriano: (L, 3-11), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.27 ERA
Thompson: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1.17 ERA
No doubt to this one, as the River Cats led the whole way, even though Pedro Liriano came within three outs of a quality start. Rich Thompson is having a nice little stretch of effectiveness, going three straight games (and 6.2 innings) without having given up an earned run, and having only surrendered one in his brief tenure at Salt Lake.
Terry Evans is mired in a little bit of a funk these days, hitting only .233 for July. I'll bet he'll be glad to see the month in the rearview mirror, too.
Rodriguez, S: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Collins: 2-3, 1 RBI
Gonzalez, M: (W, 6-3), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 2.98 ERA
Austen: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
O'Day: (S, 3), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 2.77 ERA
David Austen has been adjudged ready for AA, and proved it by providing two innings of shutdown relief in this game won on a Sean Rodriguez fifth-inning double. It's Austen's second trip to AA; he missed all of 2006, presumably to injury (I would guess UCL replacement, but what do I know).
Michael Collins was having a tough year in AA, but he's lately heating up with a .301/.339/.377 July; he's got a six-game hit streak active, though he's only had two extra-base hits during it.
With the win, the Travs take their fifth straight game, and have an opportunity to sweep their first four-game series of the season if they can win today.
Statia: 2-5, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K
Wipke: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Mosebach: 6.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.54 ERA
Brandt: 1.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.87 ERA
Jepsen: (BS, 1)(L, 1-4) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 3.80 ERA
Rancho cruised through seven with a comfortable 7-4 lead until Modesto sent 12 men to the plate in the seven-run eighth, tagging Kevin Jepsen with his fourth loss of the year. Bobby Mosebach got the start and was one run past a quality start.
Phillips: 3-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Trumbo: 0-5, 2 K
Dini: 2-4, 1 RBI
Johnson: 2-5, 1 2B
Rosario: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 K
O'Sullivan: 4.1 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 8 K, 5 BB, 2.37 ERA
Madrigal: (W, 5-3) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 2.45 ERA
Diaz: (S, 1), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.59 ERA
Wilbert Diaz drove in the winning runs on his 11th-inning RBI single, and Amalio Diaz made it stand up. Sean O'Sullivan snapped a string of four starts in which he completed five or more innings (and eight innings in two of his prior three) by getting chased in the fifth, though he ended up with a no-decision.
Mark Trumbo failed to get a hit for the second time in four games, but what should also be noted is that he's also struck out in only three times in his last 18 at-bats, and 22% of his July at-bats. I still have hope. P.J. Phillips also homered and walked, going 3-for-5.
Kennedy: 2-4, 3 RBI, 1 BB
Giovanatto: 3-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
De Los Santos: 3-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB
Jimenez: (W, 2-1), 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 3.15 ERA
Donato Giovanatto blasted two longballs to drive in three in a laugher over Billings. Esmerlin Jimenez pitched perhaps his strongest outing of the year, going six scoreless innings while striking out six; the Owlz held a shutout through eight and a third innings, when Ryan Brasier gave up a solo homer to Francis Meade. Ryan Kennedy scored three runs and drove in three.
Conger: 0-4, 3 K
Mount: 0-3
Anton: (L, 3-1), 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 9 K, 2 BB, 1.80 ERA
The Angels gave up two unearned runs on three errors, and got no offensive contributions whatsoever from their rehabbing players, but the good news was that Michael Anton otherwise pitched his best game of the year, striking out nine through six innings of work while only surrendering four baserunners. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the 22-year-old.
Hank Conger was involved in an unusual 9-2 double play to end the ninth. With the bases loaded and one out, Francisco Tirado flied out to Norberto Ortiz, who nailed Gabriel Ortiz at home plate.
Dewitt: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Howard, K: 2-4, 1 BB
Dunlap: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Raglani: 4-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Tomlin: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Hammes: 0-3, 2 K
Troncoso: 0-1, 1 K
Hammes: (W, 5-5), 5.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 4.02 ERA
Troncoso: (S, 4), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 3.07 ERA
The Suns unleashed a barrage on Mississippi, and part of that was Anthony Raglani's 4-for-5 night at the plate. He needed it, because it broke a 1-for-19 skid. Zach Hammes notched his fifth win of the season and his second of the month.
May: 2-4, 1 RBI
Hoffmann: 2-4, 1 RBI
Gutierrez, G: 2-4, 1 RBI
White, C: 6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.60 ERA
Meque: (W, 5-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 6.46 ERA
Alvarez, C: (S, 1), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.79 ERA
Inland Empire broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh by posting three of their own, two on Shane Justis's triple and one on Ivan De Jesus's RBI single. Jacobo Meque got the win in relief despite giving up a scoring two-out wild pitch in the top of the eighth, shortchanging Cody White, who posted a quality start.
Mattingly: 2-3, 1 BB
Adkins: (L, 0-1), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 4.50 ERA
Malone: 3.1 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.75 ERA
Preston Mattingly is just having an awful month of July, but it's not all that different from his bad April and May. I wonder if he repeats the Midwest League?
Kanaby: 2-4, 1 K
Vetters: 2-4, 1 K
Gallagher: 2-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Blevins: (W, 2-0), 5.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.91 ERA
Brooks, D: (S, 1), 4.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 7.20 ERA
Jovanny Rosario's three-run blast in the fourth put the Raptors ahead for good in a game in which they never trailed. Jim Gallagher hit his second homer of the year, a solo shot in the second. Robert Blevins earned his second win of the year, and his first as a starter.
