News
- The Dodgers disabled Chin-hui Tsao after he complained of shoulder soreness (again?) and called up D.J. Houlton (again).
- Eric Stults shadowed Brett Tomko, who got the start today.
- Randy Wolf is likely to return at the end of July.
- Hong-Chih Kuo tried to play catch again but reports problems with his elbow. He has no definite return date.
- This is an odd one: the Mariners called up ex-Angel Jake Woods from AAA Tacoma on Saturday, only to designate him for assignment today.
Scores
Brown: 2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI
Gorneault: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Evans: 1-4, 1 2B, 3 K
Eylward: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Wilson: 0-4, 2 K
Saunders: (L, 4-7), 6.0 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 5.11 ERA
Those calling for the return of Joe Saunders to the Angels' rotation have to be eyeing the results of this game nervously, especially with the likely demotion-inducing scenario of Ervin Santana leading off the road series at Tampa Bay. Saunders gave up a pair of longballs, a three-run shot in the third to Delwyn Young, and a two-run homer to Chin-Lung Hu in the fifth.
Eric Cyr got the win for Las Vegas, one out and one run away from a quality start. He struck out nine along the way, but gave up three home runs, solo shots to Mike Eylward, Nick Gorneault, and Matt Brown. Brown later got another solo blast off Casey Hoorelbeke.
Four 51's had multiple hits in the game, Wilson Valdez (2-for-3 with a walk at leadoff, and three runs scored), Hu, Young, and Andy LaRoche.
Morrissey: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Myers: 3-4, 2 RBI
Collins: 0-4, 1 K
Butcher: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Pullin: (BS, 3)(L, 3-4) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.23 ERA
O'Day: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.00 ERA
Brok Butcher's bullpen spoiled a solid Texas League debut, as Aaron Pullin lost it after giving up three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Pullin retired only one batter in the loss.
The offensive highlight of the game was 27-year-old catcher Corey Myers' 3-for-4 night in his eighth appearance for the Travs, driving in two. He appears to be the Travs' new starting catcher since the departure of Bobby Wilson, as he has played almost every day. He's hitting .393/.414/.500 with one home run in short service. Myers had been Salt Lake's reserve catcher last year, but was let go at the end of the season, and briefly turned up with the Long Beach Armada in the Golden Baseball League, from which the Angels signed him only a few days ago. Myers principally played first and third base in the Diamondbacks' organization as a first-round pick (4th overall) in the 1999 draft.
Pettit: 2-3, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB
Wipke: 2-4, 1 2B
Leblanc: 3-3, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Brandt: (W, 1-0), 6.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2 HR, 3.78 ERA
Jepsen: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.32 ERA
The Quakes simply walloped Lancaster, with Christopher Pettit's three-run shot the highlight of a game in which he got on base four times in five tries. Struggling centerfielder Josh Leblanc had a much-needed 3-for-3 night, driving in three runs, including his eighth-inning solo blast.
Douglas Brandt made his first Cal League start after seven relief appearances for the Quakes, and earned his first win as well. David Austen continued his solid work for the Quakes, finishing the game with a scoreless ninth. This is Austen's third stint with Rancho; he really needs to step it up, make it to Arkansas, and show progress this year if he has any ambitions of making it to the Show.
Sweeney: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Trumbo: 3-6, 1 RBI
Nieves: 2-5, 2 RBI, 1 K
Johnson: 3-6, 2 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Knazek: 2-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Haynes: 5.0 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 9 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 3.24 ERA
Holler: (BS, 1), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 3 BB, 3.83 ERA
Browning: (W, 6-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.20 ERA
Madrigal: (S, 6), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.68 ERA
Both sides traded a lot of hits and runs, but it looked early like it might turn into a blowout after the three-run fourth, which featured two Kernels hit by starting pitcher Steve Delabar. Abel Nieves drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the tenth, and Warner Madrigal made it stick with a scoreless frame to collect his sixth save of the season.
Matt Sweeney and Tyler Johnson both homered in the game, Sweeney's 14th and Johnson's eighth. The Kernels stole five bases in the game, and had two stolen off them. Quite a game.
Gronkowski: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Jimenez: 5.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.81 ERA
Hurst: (BS, 1)(L, 3-1) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 5 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.87 ERA
Gordon Gronkowski has had four games all year where he has failed to get a hit. There must be some reason the Angels aren't moving him up, but I can't imagine what it is; Rancho has been using Clifton Remole and Patrick Reilly at first, with the odd game by catcher Ben Johnson. He's hitting .448/.495/.656 in 96 AB with 20 strikeouts and 9 walks. Maybe it's that. Whatever.
David Hurts uh, Hurst gave up five runs and ate a
blown save for his troubles, including a three-run jack to Jim
Gallagher that proved the game-winner.
Mann: 2-4, 2 K
Molina, R: (L, 1-2), 4.1 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 0 K, 5 BB, 1 HR, 4.76 ERA
Hu, C: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Young: 3-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI
LaRoche: 2-4, 1 2B
Cyr: (W, 1-1), 5.2 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 3 HR, 8.68 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (H, 8), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 5.23 ERA
Hull: (S, 7), 1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.26 ERA
Dewitt: 1-3, 1 RBI
Dunlap: 1-4, 2 K
Rohan: 2-4, 1 3B, 3 RBI
Hammes: 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.07 ERA
Troncoso: (W, 4-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.08 ERA
Meloan: (S, 18), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 2.06 ERA
Jimmy Rohan slammed a bases-loaded triple in the sixth to give Jacksonville a lead they wouldn't surrender; that followed Kevin Howard's leadoff homer, his third of the year. Jonathan Meloan collected his 18th save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Mitchell: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Locke: 2-3, 1 K
Guerra: (L, 5-4), 4.2 IP, 7 R, 7 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 5 BB, 1 HR, 4.99 ERA
Quintana: 2.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 8.31 ERA
Lucas May and Russell Mitchell both homered as the only scoring for Inland Empire, who found themselves on the wrong side of a 12-run deficit thanks to awful outings by starter Javy Guerra and relievers Eduardo Quintana and Jacobo Meque.
Berezay: 3-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Giles: 3-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI
Bell: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Peterson: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Santana: 0-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Mattingly: 1-3
Lizarraga: 2-4, 1 K
Wall: 6.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 4.31 ERA
Melgarejo: (BS, 1), 0.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 6.62 ERA
Pfeiffer: (L, 2-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.10 ERA
Ortiz: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Jansen: 3-5
Mathews: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Fuller: 1-3, 1 3B, 2 BB
Blevins: 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
Haldis: (BS, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 8.10 ERA

Myers pick high in the draft here in Phoenix was met with some astonishment (he went to our local high school), but his older brother had a very solid career at ASU so there were some good bloodlines there. Of course i hope they both pan out, but when i heard about Trumbo's impressive pre-draft power display at the Big A, i immediately though of Corey Myers.
The lesson is that if a HS kid hits a few bombs in the big league park right before the draft, it doesn't mean he's gonna be a star.
In any event, the guy is throwing strikes. He struck out 8, against only one walk. Has he ever struck out 8 at the ML level? He had a similar outing a couple months ago - lots of runs and hits, but a ridiculous number of Ks.
Saunders: I like his peripherals, too; there might be something to his fielding support, given his historical tendencies as a groundball pitcher and the constantly shifting infield he has to work with. Or maybe, yeah, he's just unmotivated, in which case what on earth could he be thinking?
