The offensive highlight of the game was 27-year-old catcher Corey Myers' 3-for-4 night in his eighth appearance for the Travs, driving in two. He appears to be the Travs' new starting catcher since the departure of Bobby Wilson, as he has played almost every day. He's hitting .393/.414/.500 with one home run in short service. Myers had been Salt Lake's reserve catcher last year, but was let go at the end of the season, and briefly turned up with the Long Beach Armada in the Golden Baseball League, from which the Angels signed him only a few days ago. Myers principally played first and third base in the Diamondbacks' organization as a first-round pick (4th overall) in the 1999 draft.

David Austen continued his solid work for the Quakes, finishing the game with a scoreless ninth. This is Austen's third stint with Rancho; he really needs to step it up, make it to Arkansas, and show progress this year if he has any ambitions of making it to the Show.

Corey Myers reminds me of Mark Trumbo in this way: Both were local kids who were being scouted. Both went to the big league park right before the draft and hit a few shots over the fence that impressed the scouts for the big league team. The few batting practice HRs got both of them big contracts in the draft and were projected to be stars. And then they immediately stalled in pro ball.
Myers pick high in the draft here in Phoenix was met with some astonishment (he went to our local high school), but his older brother had a very solid career at ASU so there were some good bloodlines there. Of course i hope they both pan out, but when i heard about Trumbo's impressive pre-draft power display at the Big A, i immediately though of Corey Myers.
The lesson is that if a HS kid hits a few bombs in the big league park right before the draft, it doesn't mean he's gonna be a star.

Joe Saunders' pedestrian performance at SLC this year doesn't cause me any concern. We've seen what he can do at the major league level. I suspect he's having some trouble motivating himself down there, to be honest.
In any event, the guy is throwing strikes. He struck out 8, against only one walk. Has he ever struck out 8 at the ML level? He had a similar outing a couple months ago - lots of runs and hits, but a ridiculous number of Ks.

Another thing to consider is that Saunders has a .314 against in Salt Lake, but a very respectable a .217 against on the road. His troubles are coming on the longball, which should not surprise given the nature of the PCL. Consider his peripherals though: his K/9 is about 9, and his K:BB better than 4:1. Those numbers are what matters, and why I think he's tended to do well in the Majors.
Maybe I'm just being a Pollyanna, but I still think Trumbo might turn into something useful. He's still got time on his side, as he was a prep player when drafted and is only 21 this year.
