Minor League Scorebook

2007-08-07: Salt Lake 11, Round Rock 5 #
Gorneault: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 BB
Murphy: 1-5, 2 K
Evans: 2-5, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 K
Morales: 2-5, 1 3B
Wood: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Porter: 3-4, 1 BB, 1 K

Bonilla: (W, 10-6), 7.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 5.60 ERA
Terry Evans drove in four, one on a first-inning groundout, two on a fourth-inning home run, and another on a RBI single in the six-run ninth. Henry Bonilla collected his third straight win, and his third quality start in his last four outings. The outing was slightly more impressive for the Bees having faced rehabbing Brandon Backe for 3.2 innings and getting a pair of runs on five hits.
2007-08-07: Arkansas did not play
2007-08-07: High Desert 5, Rancho Cucamonga 6 (12 innings) #
Sutton: 2-6
Statia: 3-6
Pettit: 2-6, 1 RBI, 1 K
Toussaint: 3-6, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wipke: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 K
Brandt: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.45 ERA
Arredondo: (W, 2-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.41 ERA
High Desert led the game up through the bottom of the seventh, when the Quakes pulled off a double steal that eventually led to both baserunners scoring. The game then tied, the Mavericks scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th but couldn't hold it as Chris Pettit reached third on right fielder Johan Limonta's fielding error. Aaron Peel then cashed in Pettit with an RBI single, and after a Patrick Reilly single that moved him to third, Drew Toussaint came through with an RBI single to win it.

Starter Bobby Mosebach went six innings and gave up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and four walks, striking out five.

2007-08-07: South Bend 3, Cedar Rapids 4 #
Bourjos: 1-4
Phillips: 1-4, 2 K
Trumbo: 0-4, 1 K
Walker: 2-3, 1 2B
Mount: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Herndon: (W, 9-8), 6.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4.56 ERA
Browning: (S, 7), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.34 ERA
Both sides traded three-spots in the second, but it was Ryan Mount's fourth homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning, that decided the game. David Herndon, Felipe Arredondo, and Barret Browning made it stand up.
2007-08-07: Orem 17, Casper 1 #
Romine: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Brossman: 2-6, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K
Navarro: 3-5, 1 RBI
Moore: 4-4, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB
Rosenbaum: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Tobin: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Veras: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 7.25 ERA
Vladimir Veras made his first relief appearance this year, following up on starter Mason Tobin's excellent outing. Tobin pitched five innings of scoreless, hitless ball, striking out exactly one batter per frame while allowing only a single baserunner. Owlz' pitching took a no-hitter into the eighth, but that accomplishment was wildly overshadowed by its huge offensive output, with Jeremy Moore going 4-for-4 with a pair of homers, both two-run shots, and driving in six, all single-game career highs. Every batter but pinch-hitter Derrick Thomas got at least one hit, with five Owlz recording two or more hits. Apparently, the team had some motivation:
"Coach Matos told us if we got 20 hits in a game, he would take us all out to dinner," Moore said. "We only had four last night, so we wanted to have a big night tonight. I don't think he's going to budge on the challenge though -- we only got 19."
2007-08-07: AZL Angels 7, AZL Cubs 3 #
Norman: 0-2, 2 BB
Perez, D: 0-2, 2 BB
Reckling: (W, 2-0), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 1.06 ERA
Rosario, An: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.95 ERA
All the Halos' scoring came in one big seven-run fifth that saw 12 players come to the plate, a hit by pitch, and three errors (two by Cubs' starter Larry Suarez, both on sac bunt attempts). Trevor Reckling posted his second straight win, and his first as a starter (it was also his first professional start).
2007-08-07: Las Vegas 5, Iowa 4 (7 innings) (Suspended) #
Valdez: 1-2, 2 BB
Maza: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB

Bauer: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.58 ERA
Completed this morning, apparently; suspended due to rain last night. Currently in progress with the tying runs on board, Rick Bauer on the mound, and Matt Craig at the plate with two out.

Update: Just completed, with one run scoring but Bauer getting a strikeout to finish things.

Also notable from last night, one for the debit column: Terry Evans' 100th K on the year.

Sadly. I'm not quite sold on Terry Evans as a major leaguer, but he could still turn into something useful. Right now, he looks to me like a borderline AAAA type, especially with all those whiffs.

Ooh, and looking at his numbers: worse than a 5:1 K:BB ratio. Eek.

Trumbo also seems to have cooled off lately. Any idea haow his July #s or last 3 weeks looked?

Nice to see Arrendondo in there for RC - any idea on how close he is to getting out of the dog house?

Yesterday's Petit mention in the BA Prospect Hot sheet was just the 3rd appearance by a Halo all year. Though he was touted at HH when i threw out the coming big drop in our farm system rankings, i'm still skeptical about him - for now, he's still just a Cal League phenom (see Sean Rodriguez).

At HH, i said, we'd be lucky to be in the Top 10 systems in the winter rankings. Unless we sign Harvey, its only reputation that will keep us in the Top 15 - there just seems to be nothing there except 3-4 guys who'll be regulars in Anaheim.

Finally, i can't say enough how impressed I am with Conger - we have to have about 4 top choices at CR - he's the youngest of them all and playing the best. For the record, add only Adenhart, Wood, and Il-Jung as the other 3 but i'm starting to worry about the absence of him so far in even Tempe.

Not much about Corey Myers lately either - he's far beyond prospect status, but he's the highest pick in the Angel system now that Ertsy's gone - #4 overall.

Haven't looked at Jung in a while, but you're right, he's been absent since his July 2 start. He now appears to be on the DL but it's not clear when that happened (probably right away considering he only made two outs in that start), from what, or for how long.
