Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition
Powered by Giuseppe Sinopoli's 1983 recording of Verdi's Nabucco (which I finally got straightened out in my iPod after several tries), here we go...
The Humiliation Of Zero: Reds 4, Dodgers 0
I booted Branson Arroyo from my fantasy team's starting rotation a few weeks back, and next thing you know, here he is having a bounceback game. Even with Jeff Kent, this team's dry stretch is getting... well, a tad long in the tooth. Three skunkings in their last four outings? One of them in one of the league's more hitter-friendly parks? The Dodgers are in a tie with the Rocks for third place. It's about time for a shakeup or three.
Brandon Wood Is Pretty Good At Taking Pitches
Good news for those of us concerned about Brandon Wood's plate discipline: he's pretty good at seeing pitches, in the upper third of Jeff Sackmann's list with a 3.94 Pit/PA. He's striking out in about 27% of his at-bats this year, down from last season's 33% with AA Arkansas.Roster Notes
- Chin-hui Tsao isn't ready to throw and Lewis Yocum will take a look at his shoulder. It's interesting that we almost never hear anything about Dr. Frank Jobe anymore. I wonder if he's gone into semi-retirement?
- Tony Abreu remained in Los Angeles to see Dr. Craig Smith, an abdominal injury specialist. It's possible he has a sports hernia.
- Derek Lowe is expected to make his next start on Saturday, moving Brett Tomko's next start to Thursday.
- Howie Kendrick will have X-rays taken today and if his hand has healed up, he can start a rehab stint next week. "It's been a few weeks now, and I'm driving myself crazy," Kendrick said. "I had never broken a bone in my body before this year, and I've broken two this season. You wonder what else could happen." I don't even want to think about that.
- Juan Rivera is running full speed in Arizona, but only in a straight line. Given the heat there, you'd think that would be enough...
- Reggie Willits fouled a ball off his face in batting practice yesterday, cutting his lip and nose.
- Mike Napoli is on pace to return to the big club on Monday. He's running, doing treadmill work, and hitting in a batting cage. If that's the case, it sounds like a very brief rehab stint may happen starting Friday or Saturday.
- Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres will DFA David Wells on Thursday.
- Wily Mo Pena has expressed his desire to be traded from the Red Sox, presumably because of playing time. J.D. Drew is expected to get the start in center in tonight's game to give Coco Crisp a night off.
- Barry Bonds hit his 756th career homer. The Giants lost anyway, 8-6; the Nats are 14-6 since July 17, second only to the 14-5 Diamondbacks in the NL during that stretch, and third to the 15-6 Yankees in MLB.
- Russell Branyan, released by the Padres, signed a minor league deal with Cleveland, the team that drafted and developed him.
OT: Comic-Con Bag Dress
I don't normally care about the huge fanfest that Comic-Con has become (did you know that it's a 501(c)(3) charity?), but I thought this piece of seamstress ingenuity was pretty damn cool:Sometimes marketing campaigns took on a life of their own, as in the alteration or second uses of show giveaways. We saw this costumed Homer (pictured above) who'd altered his 300 shield, given away to promote DVD sales, to celebrate instead the 400 episodes of the Simpsons TV show. And by the last day of the show, the over-size Smallville bags had been converted to clothing by at least one attendee. Of course, veteran con-goers were unsurprised by this outcome; on Wednesday night, we heard the prediction, and on Sunday saw the reality of the Smallville Bagdress.
