Scores

2007-08-11: Portland 4, Salt Lake 5 #
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Evans: 0-3, 1 BB
Wood: 1-4
Morales: 2-4, 1 2B
Murphy: 2-4, 1 2B
Wilson: 0-0, 1 BB
Serrano: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.11 ERA
Shell: (W, 5-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 5.44 ERA
Nick Gorneault's solo homer in the sixth looked like it would be the only run the Bees would take to the showers with them. Then in the ninth, Beavers reliever Scott Cassidy melted down, giving up a walkoff, bases-clearing double to Casey Smith with two out. Bobby Wilson got a two-out pinch-hit walk in that ninth inning rally, and Kendry Morales drove in the inning's other run on an RBI double.
2007-08-11: San Antonio 4, Arkansas 3 #
Smith, Co: 3-3, 1 2B, 2 BB
Coon: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Rodriguez, S: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Collins: 0-3
Rodriguez, F: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.02 ERA
Austen: (BS, 1), 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.94 ERA
Edwards: (L, 4-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.15 ERA
David Austen is finding the Texas League much less hospitable than the Cal League; he's given up an earned run in each of his last five appearances. This time, he got a blown save for his efforts, though the final blow came against Bill Edwards, who gave up a pair in the top of the eighth, one on an RBI triple to Chad Huffman that allowed Tim Brown to score from first. His bad outing spoiled one of Fernando Rodriguez's better outings, six innings of one run ball (though only three strikeouts).
2007-08-11: Inland Empire 3, Rancho Cucamonga 6 #
Statia: 2-3, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Remole: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 K

Cook: (S, 1), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.00 ERA
Steven Marek pitched seven innings and gave up three runs, all earned, while striking out five on the way to a Rancho victory. A big four-run second inning capped by Aaron Peel's RBI single.

For the 66ers, Travis Denker hit a leadoff homer in the first.

2007-08-11: Great Lakes 3, Cedar Rapids 2 #
Bourjos: 0-4, 2 K
Phillips: 1-4, 2 K
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 RBI
Nieves: 2-4
Mount: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Mendoza: (L, 1-4), 6.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 4.46 ERA
Browning: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.23 ERA
Dodgers and Angels minor leaguers played each other at two levels today, both in the Cal League and here in the Midwest League. This time, Great Lakes took the lead in the sixth on Eduardo Perez's double, and got an important insurance run in the seventh on Matt Berezay's RBI single. Tommy Mendoza pitched six innings of two-run ball (one unearned on Matt Sweeney's fielding error), but took the hard-luck loss.

James Adkins got the start for the Loons, his sixth, but in none of them has he completed more than three innings. He left this one in the third, and then it was Tim Sexton's turn to shine. Sexton, making his professional debut, posted five shutout innings, allowed two hits, struck out six, and got his first professional win to boot. Miguel Ramirez got his 14th save of the season.

Comments:
"(S)mell" is a transitive verb in Maddon's sentence: "smell it".

you should mention and link a good Figgins piece in the Times - it was well-written imo by Kurt Streeter.
