News
- Gary Matthews, Jr. is
tired of batting DH, but there's not a lot he can do with a
contused knee. We saw the trainer come out on Friday night
while Matthews, Jr. was standing on second and later go into the dugout and
point to his knee. Sure enough...
"I don't want to injure myself any further," said Matthews, who made only one start at DH this season before Friday. "We want to knock out [the swelling] now so it's not a lingering issue that will affect the team."
Running isn't so much the problem for Matthews, who said he will consider an MRI test if the knee doesn't improve in the next few days.
"Stopping is when I feel it the most," said Matthews, who has been a difference-maker on defense this season. "But it doesn't feel like there's any structural damage. I don't think it's anything huge."
- Howie Kendrick will start a rehab stint today at Rancho, and will head off the Salt Lake on Monday. There is a "chance" that Howie will play in the Friday day/night doubleheader at Boston.
- Mike Napoli is eligible to come off the DL today, but won't; the Angels feel he needs more time to recover. He'll probably come back midweek.
- The Dodgers purchased Chad Moeller from the Reds and assigned him to AAA Las Vegas.
- Grady Little said of Shea Hillenbrand that "I'm sure he'll be with us before the season's over."
- Las Vegas 51's first baseman John Lindsey was named Dodgers' Minor League Player of the Month for July. James McDonald of AA Jacksonville and Jesus Rodriguez of single-A Inland Empire were awarded Pitchers of the Month.
- Tardy: 3B Josh Bell was promoted to Inland Empire.
- The Padres called up Pete Laforest from AAA Portland, and disabled Michael Barrett with concussion-like symptoms.
- Former Dodger prospect Edwin Jackson won a complete
game shutout, his first, against a depleted Rangers lineup.
He four-hit the Rangers through nine, and is now 3-11 on the
year. Joe Maddon liked
what he saw:
"When he gets deep into the game, he starts throwing the ball aggressively," Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He still had 99 (mph) in the tank. I like it when guys smell it like that."
I'd be scared if my boss told me he liked how I smelled... - Former USC Trojan Ian Kennedy may make his major league debut with the Yankees against the Orioles on Tuesday. He would replace, albeit temporarily, Roger Clemens in the rotation while Clemens serves a five-game suspension for ... throwing inside.

Nick Gorneault's solo homer in the sixth looked like it would be the only run the Bees would take to the showers with them. Then in the ninth, Beavers reliever Scott Cassidy melted down, giving up a walkoff, bases-clearing double to Casey Smith with two out. Bobby Wilson got a two-out pinch-hit walk in that ninth inning rally, and Kendry Morales drove in the inning's other run on an RBI double.

Edwards: (L, 4-3) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.15 ERA
David Austen is finding the Texas League much less hospitable than the Cal League; he's given up an earned run in each of his last five appearances. This time, he got a blown save for his efforts, though the final blow came against Bill Edwards, who gave up a pair in the top of the eighth, one on an RBI triple to Chad Huffman that allowed Tim Brown to score from first. His bad outing spoiled one of Fernando Rodriguez's better outings, six innings of one run ball (though only three strikeouts).

Steven Marek pitched seven innings and gave up three runs, all earned, while striking out five on the way to a Rancho victory. A big four-run second inning capped by Aaron Peel's RBI single.
For the 66ers, Travis Denker hit a leadoff homer in the first.

Browning: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 3.23 ERA
Dodgers and Angels minor leaguers played each other at two levels today, both in the Cal League and here in the Midwest League. This time, Great Lakes took the lead in the sixth on Eduardo Perez's double, and got an important insurance run in the seventh on Matt Berezay's RBI single. Tommy Mendoza pitched six innings of two-run ball (one unearned on Matt Sweeney's fielding error), but took the hard-luck loss.
James Adkins got the start for the Loons, his sixth, but in none of them has he completed more than three innings. He left this one in the third, and then it was Tim Sexton's turn to shine. Sexton, making his professional debut, posted five shutout innings, allowed two hits, struck out six, and got his first professional win to boot. Miguel Ramirez got his 14th save of the season.
