Minor League Scorebook
News
- The Angels did not sign Matt Harvey. Word is that the final offer was about $1.5M; supposedly, he had mitigating velocity concerns, and wanted $2.5M. The Angels will get a compensation third-round pick in next year's draft.
- Also going unsigned: 14th-round Utah prep pitcher Tanner Robles, who will attend Oregon State.
- The Angels have shut down two pitching prospects, Jon Bachanov and Young-Il Jung. Bachanov reported tenderness in his pitching elbow before throwing a single game, and Jung had a forearm strain. Both are expected to be available for instructional league in September.
- Bartolo Colon continues to do well in rehab, and might make a go of it in the first week of September.
- The Angels are expected to call up Ervin Santana for Friday's doubleheader, but we already knew that.
- Kyle Blair did not sign with the Dodgers in an apparent dispute over $400,000 worth of bonus. Jon wasn't happy.
Scores
Wood: 0-4, 1 BB, 3 K
Morales: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Eylward: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Evans: 3-5, 2 K
Porter: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Duff: 1-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Murphy: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
Pullin: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 4.66 ERA
Bulger: (S, 9), 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.11 ERA
Kendry Morales popped his third homer in as many days, a leadoff shot in the third, and the Bees made the most of a big five-run seventh to get past the Sidewinders — though just barely, as the Snakes' junior team posted a big four-spot in the top of the ninth. Matt Wilhite had loaded the bases by walking Alberto Callaspo, and then Jason Bulger allowed all three inherited baserunners to score, one of them on a wild pitch.
Tim Duff and Mike Eylward also homered in the contest, Duff driving in three.
Bill Murphy got the start and a no-decision for giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and two walks, but struck out 10.
Pali: 2-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Collins: 0-4
Adenhart: (L, 8-7), 4.1 IP, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 6 BB, 3.84 ERA
Somebody please tell me what's wrong with Nick Adenhart... this marks his fourth straight loss, but more worrisome, his second straight game in which he registered six earned runs and three or fewer strikeouts. Worse, it marked a season-high six walks.
Rivera: 3-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Remole: 4-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Leblanc: 2-4, 1 2B
McRobbie: (W, 5-1), 5.2 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.67 ERA
Arredondo: 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.30 ERA
Alex McRobbie continued his run with his fourth straight victory and his fifth in seven starts. At 24, he's a bit old for this league, so he needs to prove himself at Arkansas before we can take these numbers too seriously. It's good to see his strikeouts increasing, because his 6.70 K/9 is pretty unremarkable.
Juan Rivera went 3-for-4 in his third rehab stint. Only three Quakes (Nate Sutton, Flint Wipke, and Josh Leblanc) failed to drive in a run, and Leblanc and Sutton each scored at least one run. A real romp over the Storm.
Perez: 2-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Moore: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Walden: 6.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.86 ERA
Calderon: (H, 1)(L, 0-1) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 9.64 ERA
Holland: (BS, 2), 0.1 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 4.15 ERA
Norman: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Molina, R: (W, 6-2), 5.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 3.23 ERA
Coello: 2.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1.71 ERA
In case you were wondering: Robert Coello is having a fine season. He's also 22, and what is a 22-year-old doing in rookie ball? His Baseball Cube page provides the answer: he was drafted twice before (by the Royals and Reds) and failed to sign. Hurry up.
Former Bruin Anthony Norman has a six-game hitting streak going, and a 10-game on-base streak; during the latter the Angels' (mainly) left fielder is hitting .400/.467/.475.
Abreu: 0-3, 1 BB
Hu, C: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
McDougall: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Huckaby: 2-3, 1 RBI
Hoorelbeke: 0-0, 1 BB
Houlton: 3.1 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.53 ERA
Hoorelbeke: (W, 4-4) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 5.90 ERA
Marshall McDougall hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh, part of a five-run seventh that put the 51's ahead for good during the opening game of a scheduled doubleheader. Wilson Valdez scored on a balk in the same frame, and homered to lead off the first. Chin-Lung Hu also homered, a one-out solo shot in the third.
D.J. Houlton started but only went 3.1 frames; the Dodgers appear to be stretching him out for starting again.
Dunlap: 0-3
Kershaw: (L, 0-1), 4.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 6.48 ERA
Hammes: 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.50 ERA
Akin: 2.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 4.37 ERA
The point of sending Clayton Kershaw up to AA and skipping a level was, what, exactly? He hasn't even completed five innings in a single game since his promotion.
Bell: 1-4, 1 K
Locke: 2-4
De Jesus: 1-4, 1 K
Alvarez, M: (L, 5-9), 4.2 IP, 9 R, 7 ER, 10 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 5.84 ERA
Pratt: 3.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 6.81 ERA
Gallagher: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
Krise: (L, 1-4), 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.41 ERA

that pitcher was a local high school hero, AZ POY, 4th round pick of the Angels in 2005.
He's gone on to be a legitimate star for USD and will be draft eligible agian next year.. Keep an eye on him next Spring and the Toreros.
He was one that got away (the first time), but will get likely get a lot more $$$ after 3 yrs in college.
