Over? Nothing's Over Until ...: Cardinals 12, Dodgers 2

Oh, the mood is foul at Dodger Thoughts. Jon's already called for help with Rules 1 (profanity) and 8 (being repetitious) in the gameday threads, which is too bad. One of the things I really appreciate about DT is that personal attacks and a lot of the bogus "you're not a true fan unless you agree with X" pseudo-arguments tend not to appear. But it must have been awfully hard to suppress with the way the Dodgers have been playing lately. With this series, the Dodgers revealed every single failure in their construction, whether it was lousy starting pitching (Mark Hendrickson surrendered eight painful runs on 11 hits, one of them a homer to Ryan Ludwick), lousy relief pitching (Scott Proctor gave up two more, as did Joe Beimel), and an inability to hit with runners in scoring position (the Dodgers stranded eight baserunners).

Troy Percival finished the game out for the Redbirds; for those curious, he hasn't surrendered an earned run in six games. He's got something in the tank; too bad the Dodgers don't. Their chances of winning the division, according to Baseball Prospectus ($), is about 16%, only a percentage point ahead of the Rockies. It's beginning to look awfully bleak for the Dodgers.

Update: The comment by baseballfiend was so blatantly absurd it required a response in the post itself. Yes, it was team construction that's caused these problems. Take a look at the Dodgers' injury list if you don't believe me: Randy Wolf, Hong-Chi Kuo, Chin-Hui Tsao, Jason Schmidt, all injury magnets, and this isn't a flaw of construction? That's like complaining you didn't know your bull would have deleterious effects on the china shop! The only place where you might have an argument is Rafael Furcal's spring training collision (something Jon brings up in his "How Did We Get Here?" post today), because that's lingered and caused him to have an awful season. We hope. Also, presumably Derek Lowe's hip, while it hasn't put him on the DL, has caused a couple of bad starts at least. But there's far more damage by design than by accident.

Oh yes, it's their "construction" and not the myriad injuries they've had.

That is such a thoroughly ignorant comment I responded to it in the post above.

Ignorant? Didn't you call me arrogant before? The Dodger's offense is simply in a horrendous slump. What can you do about that? There weren't many big bats available in the offseason. Even with the advantage of hindsight, which pitcher would you have signed? Zito? I thought Schmidt was a decent gamble for 3 years and Wolf was coming off a year and a half of recovery from his surgery, which is usually when full recovery is attained. Then you have Kuo, who is a major risk. How deep can they be without giving up all their prospects?

Yes, I did. Yes, you are.

And by the way, that "horrendous slump" includes Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra, both "proven vetruhns" of the sort beloved by Ned. Meanwhile, Wilson Betemit has 12 home runs to Nomar's 6. And, guess what -- Nomar's injured! Again! That happens to old players.

Construction.
