OT, Introduction: Well, The Dogs Are Feeling Better
Foley got his e-collar off today. We know he's feeling better because tonight he and Hannah — literally — tore apart a possum wandering through the yard that wasn't able to stay catatonic after they only thrashed it the first time. I didn't see it, but just the thought of that is keeping me up.Cocaine Found At Rod Beck's House
Police found cocaine at Rod Beck's house:The police report said Beck called his personal assistant, Tina Buchanan, at 11:57 a.m. on June 23 and asked her to come to his home because he was not feeling well. When Buchanan arrived, she found Beck lying on the master bedroom floor "not breathing and unresponsive," the report said. And yet, the cause of Beck's death has not been established. I have heard it may be due to an advanced staph infection.Buchanan later told officers "Beck used cocaine on a daily basis, but she did not know the quantity he was using," the report said. "Beck has had seizures in the past and has recently suffered from hallucinations. The hallucinations were possibly caused by his cocaine use."
New Hitting Coach, Same Results: Diamondbacks 4, Padres 0
Brandon Webb spun another gem against a Padres club that's just desperate to find itself offensively. The Pad people are a woeful 14th in the National League in runs scored, though away from home they're a decent team, 5th overall on the road. Their big 18-11 outburst Sunday at Houston notwithstanding, they have scored in double digits only seven times all year. With this loss, the Padres finished July 10-16, and a game and a half back of the Snakes, in third place for the NL West. If the Dodgers don't seem interested in winning the division, well, neither does San Diego.
Jayson Stark Says Gagne Ain't All That
Huh:Listen to one scout's assessment of Gagne, and see if he's everything you remember him as being:Via BTF."His stuff isn't nearly what people think it is. He's got the experience, and he's got the aura, but the quality of his pitches right now is very ordinary. His changeup is elevated. The mistake velocity he used to have on his fastball, he no longer has. So he has to rely on that changeup, and it just doesn't have the stop and dive it used to have. For me, he's not a difference-maker. Mark Teixeira is a difference-maker. This guy -- not anymore."
Roster Notes
- Erick Aybar is recovering from surgery on his right hand and will require at least four or five games in his rehab stint, possibly as soon as tonight.
- Dustin Moseley will make what should have been his next scheduled start, Friday against Oakland.
- The Padres acquired utilityman Rob Mackowiak from the Chisox for pitcher Jon Link. They also sent lefty reliever Royce Ring to the Braves for lefties Wilfredo Ledezma and Will Startup. Startup has yet to hit the majors, so this could be interesting; Ledezma was a mess with the Braves (0-2, 7.71 ERA), but still has time on his side (only 26).
The Padres also released Jose Cruz, Jr., freeing up a 25-man roster space.

Seriously, glad to hear that your dogs are better. The earlier shot did not do your dog justice, so the least you can do is post a new shot of him in happier times! Thanks Rob.

Bill Stoneman (Anaheim): Was I right to continue my long history of standing still at the trade deadline? Will my team be able to take the West despite it?
Christina Kahrl: Yes, and yes. Some problems--like Colon--solve themselves. Sometimes it pays to be a GM and a Taoist, but believe me when I say that the path to the playoffs in the West still goes through Anahei^H^H^H^H^H^mangeles.
