Pickoff Moves

OT: Johnny Rebs' Gutted

I forgot to mention this on Saturday, but the iconic Long Beach roadhouse Johnny Rebs' was gutted by fire, front-page news on the Long Beach Press-Telegram. A real shame, because they're a great southern eatery and one of the few where Helen doesn't turn her nose up at the Californicated fare. They're still operarating in Orange, Bellflower, and Victorville, and plan to rebuild in Long Beach, the smallest of the locations I've been to.

The Good Santana Can't Stop The M's: Mariners 4, Twins 3

Santana didn't cough up the lead, though; Matt Guerrier took the loss a walkoff home run by Richie Sexson. Good grief. Seattle is now three games back of the Angels with the win.

Gary Matthews, Jr. Hates Fenway

Why is that, Gary?
The Red Sox have had some powerhouse teams in the last 12 years, their offense is tailored to their park's quirky dimensions, especially the Green Monster in left field, and Fenway fans produce the most hostile atmosphere in baseball for visiting players.

"They're loud, they're drunk, they're obnoxious, it's one of the few places where you hear racial comments . . . it's just different," Angels center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. said. "They're passionate about their team, they get into games, and for the most part they're knowledgeable about the game. I've learned to enjoy it, but those things are maybe difficult for players who aren't accustomed to it."

...

"It's different than New York." Matthews said. "Yankees fans are passionate about their team, but they're a little more couth, they have a little more class than Boston fans. At least in New York, they appreciate guys who play the game hard and play the game right, and they let you know it. In Boston, they just smash you for three straight days, they're just dogging you the whole time."

Rick Porcello Signs $7.7M/4-Year ML Deal; Will It Affect The Angels And Matt Harvey?

Rick Porcello signed a $7.7M/4-year major league deal with the Tigers, eclipsing Josh Beckett's $7M major league deal of a few years ago, and the biggest deal for a high school pitcher ever. Unfortunately, this virtually guarantees that Matt Harvey won't sign with the Angels unless they give him a similarly expensive deal.
