16 Come 11: Angels 10, Indians 3
That was an immensely good thing, considering Vlad was a late scratch, supposedly complaining of a triceps pull after batting practice; I begin to doubt this, though, considering his 3-for-14 skid since September 2, and wonder whether he's been hiding a problem.
But for the team actually in the game, Anderson homered to cap his night, a two-run shot with Cabrera aboard, and Casey Kotchman got yet another double to break up a recent 0-for-12 skid. Kelvim Escobar had one of his bend-don't-break appearances, but I'd be lying if I told you I wasn't yelling at the radio when he gave up a two-out homer to Franklin Gutierrez. The Tribe followed that up by extending the rally and made it 3-1 on an RBI single by Victor Martinez, but that was all they sent home. The Angels plated four in the bottom of the frame and eventually scored nine unanswered runs.
Scot Shields closed things out after exemplary performances by Darren Oliver and Justin Speier, and though we've seen him be more economical with his pitches, he got the job done comfortably, impressive considering his recent performances. Heck, even Reggie Willits had a couple of hits, including a double. It's all roses for now, and with the win, the Angels take their lead to eight games over the idle Mariners.
Update: Or, not so much: Vlad underwent a precautionary MRI yesterday.
