Juan Encarnacion Expected To See Again
Encarnacion is still hospitalized and will remain so for at least another day or two. Paletta, the Cardinals' head team physician, said that Encarnacion is able to recognize some light with his left eye and that he's shown improvement in that regard over the past day, an encouraging sign that means his optic nerve has not been fully severed. Nonetheless, Encarnacion's situation remains extremely serious."It's clearly a matter of hope," Paletta said. "You hope the best for Juan and hope that he does recover. But as the [team's] statement said, he suffered a very severe injury to the eye with a very guarded prognosis with respect to him recovering his full vision. It's way too early to say whether he will or he won't, and if he doesn't, what percentage of vision loss he may have. We keep our fingers crossed, say a prayer for him and make sure he's getting the best treatment he can get."
Paletta referred to the fractures in Encarnacion's eye socket as being somewhat analogous to a cracked eggshell. But he said that the eye itself remains intact. The optic nerve has been damaged but not fully ruptured. Encarnacion is also still dealing with the effects of a concussion.
