Not Getting It Done: Padres 9, Dodgers 4

Back on August 20, Grady Little called a 4-3 win over the Rockies the team's "biggest win of our season so far". The problem with that was the lilliputian size of the opponent, relatively speaking; that was the Rocks he's talking about. I thought at the time he was kidding maybe, but with the way the Dodgers have been playing this year, maybe not. Though I don't think it was what he had in mind, it may well end up that the Dodgers are essentially playing for third place this year.

There have been more crushing defeats in recent memory (the all-but-totally forgettable Giants series being but the latest example), but the Dodgers' gross inability to get the job done at crucial moments is getting old in a hurry. Readers who show up here for my Dodger content will not be surprised to learn I have no respect for any manager who continues to run .188-hitting Olmedo Saenz out in game-critical pinch-hitting situations, let alone for a GM who continues to keep him on the roster. Why not Andy LaRoche? Esteban Loaiza over Eric Stults, or D.J. Houlton? I guess Loaiza's Sep. 3 start earned him another one, but thinking about this guy in the Dodgers' rotation next year gives me the willies.

The Dodgers are tied with the Rockies for third place in the division, six games back of Arizona with an elimination number of 12. In the Wild Card, they are also tied with the Rocks (for third), three and a half games back of ... San Diego, with an elimination number of 16. Too bad Derek Lowe hurt his pitching hand during pregame warmups. This season is over, kids. The only question is the final numbers.
