Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

Catching up on some overdueness...

Saito Likely Back

Ken Gurnick says Takashi Saito is likely to come back, and hopefully all that 1.73 ERAness he's accumulated in only 135 innings stays with him.

Well, Let's Hope Vladi's In Today's Lineup

Rick Wilton thinks much rests on today's lineup with regards to Vlad's elbow:
The tests on his sore right elbow revealed a posterior impingement (pinching) in the back side of his elbow region and tendinitis in the triceps/elbow region. He has been on the sidelines since last Wednesday and may not return to the Angels lineup until Tuesday. Guerrero has a high pain tolerance and can play at less than 100%. If he is out of the lineup, it must be serious. There don't appear to be any signals from the Angels so far that he is done for the year. If he is not ready by Tuesday, it may signal the need for more down time this week.

Best Quote About The Mariners' Swoon To Date

From Jay Jaffe:
What went wrong? As has been remarked several times, the Mariners were overachieving relative to their run differential. At that August 25 juncture, they were just 28 runs in the black, and ranked 12th on the Hit List, one rung below the A's, who were eight games worse in terms of their actual record. Now, through yesterday's action, the Mariners are 19 runs in the red, and an even more middling 17th in the most recent Hit List. It's as though they'd borrowed runs from Pythagoras all season long, and when they couldn't pay up, his hired goons broke their kneecaps with a tire iron.
Earlier in the week we read about U.S.S. Mariner touting Adrian Beltre's contract as not-quite-so-sucky, which led me to write a diary post at Halos Heaven I maybe should have posted here about how the Angels are getting even more production out of their two third basemen. (Yes, some time on Sept. 8 Maicer Izturis spent the majority of his innings at the hot corner. Wild, huh?)
