Two Meaningless Games

Bootcheck Blows It, Or, ALDS Preview: A's 3, Angels 2

Red Sox in four. Three, maybe, even. It's just miserable to watch this team at moments like this, because you know they're not going anywhere; the Red Sox have better pitching, better offense, and it's not particularly close. The Angels don't even have a single guy who hit 30 home runs on the club. Vlad is the only regular with a SLG over .500 (.547, actually). As Bootcheck showed today, the middle of the bullpen is just soft and creamy filling for the other club's offensive parts, so why bother showing up? And, speed? It would help if you got on base first. Remember 2005, anyone?

It's been a great season, Angels. Too bad there's too many obvious problems that need fixing.

Humiliation At Home: Giants 11, Dodgers 2

I watched the last couple outs of this game, as it was the final active game of the day, fairly expecting Vin Scully to announce his retirement. That didn't happen, but later on, Frank McCourt said he's going to stay the course, one of those phrases with a sorry history. Does he mean finding more inappropriate veterans to congest the lineup card for another half dozen years?

C'mon, Rob, that's ridiculous even for you. Boston has one reliable starting pitcher. And have you been watching that bullpen over the last six weeks? They're all gassed. Francona sure hasn't done them any favors, either.

My officemate is from Boston. He sounds like you...except he fully expects it to be the Angels in 3.

The Red Sox have other options besides Eric Gagne in the middle innings. Who do the Angels have besides Moseley and Bootcheck if, say, Weaver only goes five?

Neither of those guys will even make the ALDS roster.

The Halos will carry 10 pitchers: Lackey, Escobar & Weaver as the starters (they'll be going with a 3-man rotation because of the schedule); Saunders, Santana, Oliver, Speier, Shields, Rodriguez, and probably Colon.

Who does Boston have besides Gagne? Okajima has struggled recently. Manny Delcarmen doesn't scare me. Mike Timlin? Julian Tavarez? Give me a break. Clay Buchholz is done for the year.

the Angels have the better three starting pitchers, and will win the series because of it - that's the primary factor above all else.

I think you've missed the title of the blog entry - "meaningless games"

Honestly, we've won 94 games, only a couple short of the Red Sox, and lets remember, Lackey and Escobar are our main guys - if both pitch like they can (and indeed, make merely AVERAGE starts) then we have every chance of bouncing out the Sox, who are hardly as good as they were 2 or 3 seasons ago.

I think that the Red Sox probably have the edge, even if just down to homefield advantage, but it's pretty thin. (I'm more irritated that we threw away homefield advantage in the final week....)

Just imagine how good the Angels would be if their offense was good enough to be fourth in the league in runs scored.

Oh wait, they were.

Seriously? Don't watch the series then, give me your tickets. Have some faith.

Man, you blew the team off a month ago, saying they would never reach the playoffs, and frankly, Rob, you didn't have the stomach to revisit and apologize after the fact. Now you're talking the team down for the playoffs because our triple-A squad lost yesterday?

To be honest, a "fan" like you that's already written the team off (multiple times) shouldn't even be writing about them at this point in the season. Is it just a rote activity for you? You simply refuse to lend them your support unless they are exceeding all marks at all junctures. Stop sneering down at the Angels like your a great aunt sniffing at the snot-nosed waif that could have been a rich dentist.

You're disappointed in this team? Well, I'm not. I'm disappointed in you and this site. After reading faithfully for the past couple years, after reading this particular post, I'm seriously considering moving on. You only show up with blush on when the guys are frontrunning. Seriously! This is the sort of cynical, whinging garbage you'd read at the MLB forum. Support your fucking team for once when the challenge is actually, well, a challenge, Rob!

What I owe you Andrew is a more comprehensive list of why I think this team's first-round-and-done.

Okay how about this: if the angels win the first round you stop blogging about them.
