NLDS Game 2: Rockies 10, Phillies 5

Yahoo Box

Innings 1-3: Out to lunch while these frames were going down, but in the first, Troy Tulowitzki and Matt Holliday hit back-to-back jacks to give the Rocks an early lead. Franklin Morales gave up a run in the bottom of the frame on a Jimmy Rollins homer. Rollins got him again in the second with two out and men on second and third on an RBI triple to center.

In the bottom of the third, Ryan Howard reached on a hit-by-pitch that slammed his hand; he promptly got picked off first, "about six feet off the bag" according to the Phillies' radio announcers on XM, and the crowd was so stunned there was simply no audible reaction. Helen and I couldn't believe it — this is Philly, right?

Top 4th:For the second straight inning, Colorado got a leadoff double (this one from Garrett Atkins) and the first two batters fail to advance him. Intentionally walking catcher Yorvit Torrealba, pinch-hitter Seth Smith hit a dribbler up the third base line to load the bases. The Phils gave Kendrick the hook and call in Kyle Lohse.

Kaz Matsui ripped one over the fence, a grand slam. Matsui sure is making the case for a big pay raise next year. Tulo grounded out meekly to short, but the damage was done. 6-3 Rockies. Wowzers.

Top 6th: The Rockies announcers mentioned that this was Matsui's first career grand slam in the U.S.

The Phillies bullpen is suddenly looking very depleted as they send Jose Mesa to start the frame. He walks two and surrenders an RBI double to Torrealba that cashes in both baserunners; still nobody out. The Phillies fans start throwing garbage onto the field. 8-3 Rockies. Call it mismanagement in action: after Lohse gave up the slam, Charlie Manuel figured he had to pinch hit for him in the bottom of the frame. Unfortunately, that meant drawing from the bad end of his already short bullpen (only 10 pitchers in the postseason roster).

Matsui tripled home Torrealba, and the Rockies' second baseman found himself a single away from the cycle. 9-3 Rockies in a game that is becoming a rout.

Holliday cashed in Matsui, and finally, Clay Condrey struck out Helton on three pitches to end the frame. 10-3 Rockies.

Bottom 6th: Jeremy Affeldt comes in and immediately surrenders a solo shot to Ryan Howard. If Howard's hands were hurt in that hit-by-pitch, it's not getting in the way of his batting. 10-4 Rockies.

Bottom 7th: The Rockies make a mental mistake with one out, Shane Victorino at first, and Jimmy Rollins at the plate: neither of Tulowitzki or Matsui make it to second base on a pitchout, and not only does Victorino easily take second, but he gets to third as the throw whistles into center. 10-5 Rockies

Top 8th: With Antonio Alfonseca on the mound, Matsui flies out to center to likely end his chances of getting the cycle. The Rocks have 12 hits, six of them for extra bases, one of those a two-out double to Tulo in this frame.

Bottom 8th: Brian Fuentes gets two outs but walks the bases loaded, two on consecutive walks. That's enough to get Hurdle to yank Fuentes, and install closer Corpas in a double switch with Matsui, with Jamey Carroll playing second. Carlos Ruiz comes to the plate with the bases loaded, but bounces out to third on the second pitch of the at-bat, squelching the Phils' two-out rally. A number of the Phillies fans head for the exits. Still 10-5 Rockies.

Bottom 9th: Corpas shuts down the first two batters on five pitches, but gives up consecutive singles to Chase Utley and Pat Burrell. That brings Ryan Howard to the plate, and after a drama-infused at-bat, Corpas gets Howard on a called strike three. Final, 10-5 Rockies, and the Rocks get to go home with a 2-0 series lead.
