Beatdowns, And Other Pickoff Moves

ALDS Game 1: Cleveland 11, Yankees 3

Christ, people think I'm a fatalist: one loss and already Ken Rosenthal's declaring the Yankees dead:
It feels almost like checkmate.

Yankees right-hander Chien-Ming Wang again pitched poorly on the road Thursday night in Game 1 of the AL Divisional Series, losing to the Indians 12-3.

Left-hander Andy Pettitte faces a difficult matchup in Game 2 against a Cleveland lineup that mashed lefties all season.

And heaven knows what the Yankees can expect from righty Roger Clemens when the series returns to Yankee Stadium for Game 3.

...

Check: Wang was brutal in Game 1, allowing eight runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Check: Indians righty Fausto Carmona, who finished second in the American League in ERA, will oppose Pettitte in Game 2.

Mate? It could happen as soon as Game 3.

I followed this game on my cellphone while we were eating dinner before we went to see Avenue Q (hurry, only a couple weeks left in the touring company's run); the only lead the Yankees had was in the first after Johnny Damon's solo blast. They threatened several times, but the Tribe's pitching got them out of several jams, including a real nail-biter in the fifth that turned out to be starter C.C. Sabathia's last inning. Good times for the Tribe.

NLDS Game 2: Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 4

This was supposed to be a pretty even matchup, but it's turning out to be a snorer with Arizona just battering Ted Lilly. There was some chatter that this might be a case of the team trying too hard:
The Cubs now are hitting .179 in the series. Ouch.

"I think we are pressing," Chicago's Aramis Ramirez said. "As a team, we're trying to do too much. We're trying to hit two home runs in one at-bat, and that's not going to happen."

They get one try at Wrigley, at least, to turn this thing around. Livan Hernandez and his 4.93 ERA goes up against 3.92 ERA Rich Hill.

That is sweet.

Roster Notes

Longest/Shortest Odds On Managerial Firings

Diamond Leung has a list of BetUS odds for various managerial firings around the majors. Ozzie Guillen is the shortest at 4:1, while Mike Scioscia should be among the least worried (100:1). The very least concerned? Ned Yost of the Brewers (150:1). Joe Torre is on the nervous list, too, at 10:1, and Grady Little weighs in at 50:1.
