Minor League Scorebook

2008-04-08: Salt Lake 9, Tucson 7 #
Evans: 2-5, 3 K
Rodriguez, S: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Morales: 1-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Brown, M: 2-5, 1 2B
Wood: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Green: 5.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 3.60 ERA
Rodriguez, R: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 12.27 ERA
Brandon Wood was batting fifth, and that says about all you need to know about his putrid early season; his line was .174/.174/.348 going into today, and he actually improved it with this game. Actually, a lot of guys had good games, which also says something about Tucson's rehabbing Randy Johnson; the latter gave up three runs, all earned, over six innings of work while striking out seven. You expect more from a future Hall of Famer, but maybe not these days.

On the pitching side, Nick Green scattered five hits in his 2008 PCL debut, and the relievers barely got the Bees to their sixth straight win.

Myers: (S, 1), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.93 ERA
The 51's won their second game, in the end, on a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth sparked by Xavier Paul's leadoff line drive single followed by two consecutive walks to load the bases, and a third by John-Ford Griffin to push one over the plate. Terry Tiffee's seventh inning solo homer provided the margin of victory.
2008-04-08: Jacksonville did not play
2008-04-07: Lancaster 6, Inland Empire 3 (18 innings) #
Robinson: 2-8, 1 BB, 4 K
Bell: 1-6, 2 BB, 2 K
Perez: 2-7, 1 2B, 1 K
Santana, C: 1-7, 1 BB
Pedroza: 2-7, 1 BB
Wall: 4.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1.93 ERA
Leach: 3.1 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Felix: 4.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.05 ERA
Jones: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.79 ERA
Jon passed along Jeff Parenti's note that SS Christian Lara started this game with Lancaster and ended it with Inland Empire. Too bad, because his was the losing side, decided in the 18th. The defensive switches commenced in the top of the 16th inning; along with the first out, they are included here for hilarity's sake:
  • Defensive Substitution: Gabriel Gutierrez replaces first baseman Eduardo Perez, batting 4th, playing catcher.
  • Drew Locke remains in the game as the first baseman.
  • Defensive switch from catcher to second base for Carlos Santana.
  • Defensive switch from second base to shortstop for Jaime Pedroza.
  • Pitcher Change: Bridger Hunt replaces Francisco Felix, batting 9th.
  • Matt Sheely hit by pitch.
  • Pitcher Change: Joe Jones replaces Bridger Hunt, batting 5th.
  • Defensive switch from second base to first base for Carlos Santana.
  • Defensive switch from shortstop to second base for Jaime Pedroza.
  • Defensive switch from pitcher to shortstop for Bridger Hunt.
And so it went through the 18th, until Joe Jones finally took the loss. And no, Lara did not appear anywhere in there for the 66ers.

Robinson: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K

Kutz: (S, 1), 3.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Inland Empire notched their first victory of the season with this game, with Cody White and Given Kutz (no, I am not making that up) outdueling Travis Beazley and Josh Papelbon. The big blow came in the bottom of the fifth on Thomas Giles' RBI single to cash in Francisco Lizarraga and Gabriel Gutierrez.

Comments:
Maybe we should start looking seriously at Sean Rodriguez again. Mr. #7 on the Top Prospects list had a down year at Arkansas last year, but he still kept his OBP nearly a hundred points above his batting average, as he has throughout his career, and also managed to hit 17 dingers in a newly adjusted park. In 2006, he hit 29 HRs between Rancho and Arkansas. Not yet 23, he's starting well for the Bees.

As is almost-greybeard Matt Brown, suddenly Salt Lake's cleanup option.

Solid start for Sean O'Sullivan, despite getting saddled with the loss. He's looking like a possible rotation candidate as early as 2010.
