Minor League Scorebook
News
- Since I have the time for it tonight, some excerpts from the weekly
MILB.com league roundup:
- Las Vegas' 29-year-old Terry Tiffee is the hottest hitter in the PCL, with a .448 average, first in hits (65), doubles (19), second in OBP (.488), third in RBIs (30) and XBH (22), fourth in runs scored (31), and fifth in SLG (.641).
- About Arkansas' Cody Fuller: he fractured a right knee in a collision Thursday and was placed on the DL the next day, necessitating a number of roster moves detailed earlier.
- Remember that crazy 25-1 beatdown Inland Empire put on Lancaster the other day? I didn't look up the two pitchers who threw mopup in that 10-run ninth. Turns out they were both position players making their professional debuts from the mound.
- Peter Bourjos of Rancho Cucamonga leads the league in steals with 22, but has only been caught once.
- Not too surprisingly, the people who make these decisions looked the other way and handed Thomas Giles the Cal League Offensive Player of the Week award for his two-homers-in-one-inning game against Lancaster (above), despite its origin.
- For the Pitcher of the Week award, James McDonald of Jacksonville and Michael Anton of Cedar Rapids took home the trophy in their respective leagues.

Brown, D: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Wood: 1-5, 2 RBI, 3 K

Austen: (W, 1-1), 7.2 IP, 3 R, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 2.04 ERA
Brandon Wood wasn't too impressive in his first game back in the minors, coming one whiff away from a golden sombrero, though he did drive in a pair on a bases-loaded RBI single. David Austen got his first PCL win of the season for a quality start plus. Most of the scoring happened in the five-run sixth, an inning that included a single that was ruled a trap by former Angels prospect Nick Gorneault; this later resulted in the ejection of Express manager Dave Clark.

For Inland Empire, some very nice pitching by starter James Adkins and Javy Guerra, who four-hit the Quakes. Josh Bell homered, a solo shot in the sixth, and his fifth of the season.

That game-losing unearned run on Ryan Brasier? Shortstop Jerry Gonzalez-Lopez's fault. Both sides made two errors each, and both sides gave up an unearned run.

Hammes: (L, 1-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 8.37 ERA
The Minotaur just came unglued in the bottom of the fourth, allowing the first four batters to reach, a stolen base, and a wild pitch, too. Too bad, because otherwise it was a good offensive outing for the Suns.
