Doing Well By Beating The Bad Teams: Dodgers 8, Rockies 2
I still think the Dodgers got a bit unlucky in their recent Mets series, because the Giants pounded New York tonight 10-2. But maybe not that lucky; regardless, this one was destined to be a laugher after it got to be 5-1 in the fifth. Solo homers from Jeff Kent, Andre Ethier, and Matt Kemp all contributed, and even ex-Rocky Danny Ardoin drove in a run. Derek Lowe did a fine job keeping what was left of the Rockies' lineup off balance over eight innings, and Scott Proctor pitched an inning in relief that allowed a run to score but no serious damage, excepting perhaps to his reputation.
Speaking of bad, in addition to the Dodgers' victory tonight, the Cubs beat the Padres at Petco 7-6. This means the NL West is home to two of the three worst teams in MLB (the 21-37 Mariners are the other one, and would rank between the 20-38 Rockies and the 23-36 Padres). On the one hand, yay, because that should help the Dodgers' overall chances of making it to the postseason, but it's also lame because you are only as good the quality of your competition, too.
