Minor League Scorebook
News
- Diamond Leung has some news about the Dodgers' international signings. "But don't expect the Dodgers to be throwing around seven-figure bonuses like the A's reportedly did in giving Michel Inoa $4.25 million." It looks like more of a smokescreen for the same sort of behavior they've been systematically engaging in for some time now.
- Kelvim Escobar's shoulder started complaining again after Monday's rehab assignment; he is expected to revisit the surgery option after a second opinion. The Times is reporting that he's likely done for the season.
- Hiroki Kuroda is scheduled to come off the DL today and pitch today against Houston in the final game of the series.
- Here's a piece about Inland
Empire's Carlos Santana — the catcher, not the
guitarist. Santana is, like Russell Martin before him, a
converted third baseman:
"I am learning something new about it every day," said Santana, a 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic. "I am just trying to keep on working hard to become a good catcher."
(Via Diamond Leung.)Santana was a third baseman and outfielder when he signed in 2004, but some in the Dodgers organization believed Santana had the tools to be a solid catching prospect.
"His raw arm strength alone made him intriguing, but he also has great athleticism and very soft hands," said De Jon Watson, the Dodgers' assistant general manager in charge of player development. "This has been a growing process for Carlos. Sure, there have been some bumps along the way, but he will improve as he matures."
Scores
Sandoval, F: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Brown, M: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Wood: 3-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Loux: (W, 10-4), 6.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 4.29 ERA
Jepsen: (S, 2), 2.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2.51 ERA
Angels vs. Dodgers minor leaguers at each others' throats! Again! Yay! Actually, I gotta admit getting to see more of these kinds of matchups is one of the coolest things about the organizational realignment in the Dodgers minors that's been going on over the last few years. Sean Rodriguez had a monster day at the plate, with two homers and two doubles, and Matt Brown and Freddie Sandoval also had one each, on a fairly blustery day with 12 MPH winds. It was a good thing, because Shane Loux, their starter, wasn't that steady, giving up five runs, one unearned thanks to a throwing error by second baseman Sean Rodriguez. The Bees did most of their damage in the four-run fifth that started off with a Rodriguez double, and back-to-back homers from Sandoval and Matt Brown.
Nomar Garciaparra continued his minor league rehab stint, going 2-for-3 at shortstop. The 51's big rally came in the bottom of the three-run seventh, two of which came thanks to a Sean Rodriguez throwing error and a subsequent scoring groundout by John Lindsey. Justin Orenduff took the loss, giving up seven runs (one unearned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. Also, Andruw Jones made his second rehab appearance (he homered in Monday's game, something I forgot to mention), going 3-for-3, all singles, with two RBIs.
Johnson, Be: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Pettit: 0-4
Statia: 0-2
Mosebach: (L, 6-7), 7.0 IP, 8 R, 8 ER, 10 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.82 ERA
Browning: 1.0 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.45 ERA
Frisco just stomped on Bobby Mosebach while Rough Riders starter Michael Schlact dominated the Travs, retiring 15 in a row at one point; the Travs only managed six hits against him. Ben Johnson hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh for the Travs' only tally. The interestingly-named Andrew Laughter came in to finish the game for Frisco in the bottom of the ninth; I guarantee you there wasn't much laughter in the Travs' dugout after this one.
Mount: 1-5, 2 K
Ortiz, W: 2-5, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Trumbo: 0-4, 3 K

Herndon: (S, 7), 1.0 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 5.31 ERA
Angels 'N Dodgers, Part Deux: Wilberto Ortiz wants a promotion back up to Arkansas, tripling in a first inning run by way of answering the 66ers' first two; the aforementioned Carlos Santana blasted that pair home on a one out longball to center. Inland Empire had a 3-2 lead at the stretch, but Francisco Felix presided over a very busy seventh that included a scoring walk by Larry Infante and a hit batter (Anthony Norman).
Peter Bourjos tripled, while Mark Trumbo got the strikeout hat trick. Amalio Diaz pitched a quality start plus, and David Herndon recorded his seventh save, his third consecutive and his seventh since moving to the bullpen. Santana was the only 66er to record multiple hits; Cody Fuller also tripled.

A quality start plus for Trevor Reckling, who here picked up his fourth win in his last five starts. Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the 6th, the River Bandits brought in reliever Jared Bradford, who gave up four runs and got tagged with the loss; the inning included a safety squeeze by Andrew Romine.
