Sticks Need To Save Frankie
From our friends the Kamenetzky's, a piece about the Angels and the peculiarities that force Mike Scioscia to call in K-Rod in the ninth for some rather gaudy save totals. Here's Mike:“I think we’ve seen the worst side. After the first three or four weeks of the season until maybe the last 20 games, our offense was probably at its most ineffective stage that we’vesen in a while here. Hopefully we’ve turned a corner on that. We were totally dependent on manufacturing runs and the situational game because we wren’t driving the ball and nobody was hitting for, I want to say, at least 50 or 60 games. Now we have the potential to do the things we saw in Spring Training, when we projected what our offense could do. It’s an offense, a lineup, that can get deep. I think we can score in a lot of ways.”

Yawn or throw tomatoes? I'm not sure which should be the right reaction to Kevin Baxter's strange piece in the Times decrying Matt Kemp's failure to steal bags as a leadoff man, but whatever. - Jon Heyman at Sports Illustrated reports that the Mariners are in talks to trade Jarrod Washburn to the Yankees. Perhaps the Bombers are overly impressed by his career 2.82 ERA in Yankee Stadium.
He'll be a free agent at the end of the season, so why deal now?Update: Apparently not; Stephen in the comments notes that Washburn won't be a free agent until after the 2009 season. - Also, supposedly the Snakes and Mets are talking to the M's about Raul Ibanez.
- The Yankees are considering hiring free agent OF Barry Bonds, according to the New York Post.
- Former Angel Derrick Turnbow was sent to Phoenix by the Brewers for tests on his arm. It's likely his season is over, with a 10.50 ERA and very weak peripherals.
- Kip Wells will be sent to the bullpen following a disastrous outing against the Dodgers earlier in the week.
