- Not much going on in this week's Prospect
Hot Sheet for either team, at least from a positive standpoint; in
the Not-So-Hot Sheet, however...
Austin Gallagher, 3b, Dodgers. Gallagher's season has been pretty incredible for 19-year-old at high Class A Inland Empire. He batted .328/.372/.528 in July and made a couple appearances on the Hot Sheet. But he's come back to earth after a poor August, batting just .107/.194/.179 (3-for-28) with seven strikeouts this week. In August, he's .174/.316/.217 (8-for-46) in 12 games.
Also, in the Water Under The Bridge Dep't, Dallas McPherson hit his 40th homer Thursday. - Stephen Smith writes that all the Angels and their affiliates may be participating in their respective leagues' postseasons. The big club probably has the surest grip on a postseason berth, while Cedar Rapids is the most tenuous. Salt Lake has to keep their lead intact over the next 15 games, with a five-game lead over Tacoma. Rancho has to beat back Inland Empire and Lake Elsinore for a slot with 17 games (as of his time of writing) left. Cedar Rapids is currently eligible for postseason play, but only because of a quirky rule that lets the top two teams in for the second half.

What's up with the Angels and the draft? Last year, the team was second to last in dollars spent on the draft, behind only Houston. And this year, the team will again be among the laggards in dollars spent. In contrast, the Red Sox spent over $10 million this year on the draft. Just as troubling, the Angels aren't spending big bucks in the internationl market, either. If these trends continue, it's going to be hard for the team to sustain its success.

You are so quick to point out any negatives within the Dodger organization. It makes it increasingly difficult to give credence to your site, as I'm sure the amount of postings should bring to light. Yes, Gallagher is in a slump, the Angels' teams are winning (though I suspect average age amongst prospects on those levels is higher than those of the Dodgers, except maybe at AAA), etc, etc. The Dodgers have also graduated their best prospects to the major league level, where they're thriving. The Angels should trade Wood and McPherson now, since they are both AAAA players.
