The Giants have a significant scavenger bird problem at AT&T Park (think pigeons and seagulls), and have thus far unsuccessfully brainstormed ways to chase them off. A native red-tailed hawk (nicknamed Bruce Lee) does what he can, but he's only one predator, and there are a lot of gulls. Bay Area Sports Guy suggests Barry Zito, falconer.
It's long been theorized that the ability to use and detect irony is a sign of intelligence; may we infer the reverse? I certainly imagine that isn't an unreasonable outcome, and so I pass on this Hardball Talk report from spring training, in which Giants fans swing and miss at the obvious guffaw-inducing irony of calling out Ryan Braun for using steroids.
I missed much of this game, but the parts I missed I either didn't want to see anyway or wished I had. Jered Weaver has, despite my flawed memory, pitched fairly well in Arlington, with a career 3.73 ERA in 71 IP. He gave up four tonight in six innings of work, not great but hardly terrible.
The major good news was Kevin Jepsen and Trevor Bell each providing a clean inning in the seventh and eighth innings respectively. Otherwise, the Angels' offense fell down on the job, save for a fluke solo homer by Erick Aybar, causing the Halos to drop their third straight game, and slicing another win off their division lead, now only a half game over Texas. Nice while it lasted, I guess.
Dodgers Barely Hold On To A Kershaw Win: Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3
Kershaw was masterful through seven, giving up only five baserunners while striking out eleven. Unfortunately, the bullpen nearly gave it all back, as anointed closer Vicente Padilla left the game in the ninth with the tying run in scoring position, and the winning run at first. That was that, and Don Mattingly pulled him for Kenley Jansen, who somehow managed to finish the game without further incident. Yow.
From esophageal cancer; the great Twins slugger was their cleanup hitter in the 1965 World Series against the Dodgers. A great player and a nice guy by all accounts.
Late: Is Howie Kendrick For Real?
Yes, but we'll see how real; his BABIP is awfully high in early going.
Just For Fun: Harry Shearer Does Vin Scully Announcing The McCourt Fire Sale
At first, I was upset by missing this one entirely; I had my iPhone on vibrate, so when the MLB At Bat app alert ticked on, I didn't hear it. Too bad, because this one completed another Angels series win.
On the other hand, even though the Halos led the whole way, and Jered Weaver pitched another gem, I did miss
Howie Kendrick having another 0-fer game in the two-hole. Dude, snap out of it.
Kevin Jepsen exploding for two runs while making only a single out.
Brian Fuentes surrendering a two-run jack to right-handed slap-hitter Willie Bloomquist. At some point Scioscia has to start paying attention to his platoon splits against righties, currently .263/.364/.711. Right? Am I right?
Hiroki Kuroda actually only gave up three earned runs, but the other kind counts too, and that's what sank the Dodgers. The offense didn't do much against Braves starter Kris Medlen — when I heard Vinny call his name on the radio, I assumed it was a typical Anglophone mistake pronunciation of Medellin, also the Columbian capital. But no, he was born right here in Artesia. He sure did a number on the Dodgers, who scored all their runs facing Aussie Peter Moylan, who allowed all his inherited baserunners to score. Thus the game.
A couple of injuries also marred this one: Jeff Weaver was announced but failed to take the mound; he apparently has a blister. Also, Casey Blake failed to make the start because of back spasms, and is presumably day-to-day.
From Vin Scully Is My Homeboy. Given the respective way both teams are playing right now, I'm not sure I'd be invoking the Angels in my promotional material...
