Boone To Be An Angel?

The Dayton Daily News reports Aaron Boone will soon sign with the Angels (soul-sucking registration required):
It won't be long before former Reds third baseman Aaron Boone signs a contract with the Anaheim Angels, the Dayton Daily News has learned.

Boone is in Arizona taking batting practice with the belief he soon will be ready to sign and go on a rehab assignment.

Even if the Reds were interested in re-signing Boone, which they are not, it isn't likely he would sign with the Reds.

He purchased a home in Paradise Valley, near Phoenix, and said he will sign only with a team on the West Coast that trains in Arizona. That eliminates the Los Angeles Dodgers, who train in Vero Beach, Fla.

Of course, it could also be the Mariners, Giants, A's, or Padres, but the M's have long-termed Scott Spiezio (of whom, a recent report talks up -- but maybe they're thinking "trade" on that one). The Pads have Sean Burroughs, but Boone's career .780 OPS might make them think twice about a youth movement that's keeping them only shakily in first. And the Giants -- well, they need all the help they can get, but do you really want to take a flyer on a team that's only now managed to get to .500?

And then there's the A's. Gack. I hope not.

I dunno. Boone's a rent-a-player, but it could get interesting if the Angels used him as a buffer so they don't have to rush McPherson.

Comments:
A's don't seem like a good fit, as Chavez should be ready in 6-8 weeks, or so they say. Boone wants to play 3rd, and Chavez ain't moving elsewhere anytime soon.

At this point, the only acquisition I want to see the angels make is one of those 1000+ OPS types. But that's not going to happen, so I'm happy with davanon and figgins. Not that I wouldn't welcome a Boone; just that the upgrade isn't much of an upgrade.

I assume you meant .780 OPS, not SLG.

Yes, you're right, it should be OPS.
