Pickoff Moves
Jered Weaver, Scott Boras, And Draft Dodging
Scott Boras' scary comments about an eight-digit signing bonus for client Jered Weaver might have the predictable effect of dropping his young client's position in the draft. (Thanks to Texas Rangers Blog for that link.)"The problem," says one AL GM, "is that agents want the same money for this year's top picks as truly exceptional talents Prior, Upton and Mauer. But not only is there a huge dropoff after the first eight or so players, but there are serious questions about every one of those top eight players."A very thin draft, so they say, this year, with few legitimate talents in even the first round. Or maybe they're just kicking the tires of the cars before they buy and it's hardball negotiating. But, yeah, $10 million for an unproven kid is way too much when guys with track records are getting less than that for three years. Which, of course, is the point of this "unnamed GM" quote:
"This is a good year not to have multiple first- and sandwich-round picks," says another AL GM. "The Twins have six of the first 40-something picks. Because of the artificial slot figures agents work off, they'd probably be better off putting a lot of what they'll have to spend on talent for their major league team."Yeah, that would be either Brian Cashman or Bill Stoneman. Trivia question: when did the Yankees last have a first-round draft pick?
LA Blog du Jour: Supermodel Personals
Too. Damn. Funny. Thanks to LA Blogs for that one.Snakes 6, Dodgers 5
Jeffy has a good outing and the bully can't hold it for him? And the bully pitcher in question is Darren Dreifort and his 4.81 (!!) ERA? Say it ain't so! As Batgirl might say, Dreifort's been voted off the island.Incidentally, did anyone else catch the pregame show and hear Ross Porter go on a tangent about Weaver's horrible first innings? Where might I have heard that before?
Angels DL Updates
A bunch of things happening on the DL for the Angels, from this Times story:- Anderson's going to appear in rehab starts at Rancho starting tonight, which would put him there with Salmon simultaneously. Woo hoo!
- Salmon's almost ready to come back, but the question is whether he can keep his knee together. The pain he experienced is from a previous surgery, and caused by "bone on bone [in the joint], and when it gets inflamed, we've got to bring that down and mask the pain. It flares up … but it's not going to get worse."
Salmon, 35, could correct the defect with a cartilage transplant, but that procedure requires a 10-month healing process, and with only one year left on a four-year, $40-million contract, Salmon didn't see the point.
"I'm getting older, and this career is not going to last forever," Salmon said. "Let's just have fun and play with it."
- Washburn has tightness in his upper left leg, but won't be moved to the DL.
- Eckstein and Benjie Molina will be back for the Milwaukee series.
