Pickoff Moves

God how I hate this new Blogger interface. Just ate another column. Grr.

Batgirl Sells Out, Part 2

The thrilling conclusion!

Prescience

From Tom Tippett's Diamond Mind, August 9, regarding the Angels:
You hear all the time about how the Angels play the game the right way: making contact and moving runners with hits and productive outs. But did you know that no other team has run into more outs on the bases? [Emphasis mine] That's not counting times caught stealing. With CS included, they're tied for second. As a result, they're no more efficient on offense than the average team, and they're tied for the wildcard lead mainly because they have the league's best bullpen.

BA Ranks Shortstops

Baseball America ranks minor league shortstops, and both the Dodgers and Angels do well. The Dodgers' Joel Guzman ranks first, and the Angels' Eric Aybar and Alberto Collaspo rank fourth and ninth respectively.

Chuck Tiffany In "Daily Dish"

Another from BA, Chuck Tiffany is featured in today's "Daily Dish":
Tiffany has struck out 46 in 21 innings--that's 86 batters faced and 46 whiffs. For the season, he's now 5-2, 3.70 with 141 strikeouts (third in the South Atlantic League) in just 100 innings.

Tiffany attacks hitters with a lively low- to mid-90s fastball, an above-average curveball and a major league-quality circle changeup.

AFL Rosters

More from BA, the Angels named LHP Dusty Bergman, LHP Jonathon Rouwenhorst, C Mike Napoli, OF Nick Gorneault, OF Tommy Murphy, and a TBD infielder to the Arizona Fall League. The Dodgers will send LHP Ryan Ketchner, RHP Tom Farmer, RHP Steve Schmoll, RHP Eric Stults, C Russ Martin, INF James Loney, and OF Jason Repko.

More On The Scott Boras Soaps

This oughta get an Emmy. Stephen Drew, first-round draft pick by Arizona, has elected to withdraw from classes, so it's back to the drawing board. Mainly of interest because we can expect a similarly drawn-out signing fight from Scott Boras's client, Angels first round pick Jered Weaver. Speaking of, Rich Lederer has a nice piece about the conditions under which the Angels' first-round pick might sign. Boras is thinking eight figures...
