The Battle Of The Bullpens
At all-baseball.com, Jon riffs on the necessity of burning through your closer in tight, meaningful games, this after Brad Lidge and John Smoltz have gone mano-a-mano into long innings. The hope is this will save your win. It didn't work out that way for the Astros today, though, as their shallow bullpen -- made shallower by the midseason trade of Octavio Dotel -- just blew the game by putting Dan Miceli in. Miceli then gave up a game-winning two-run dinger in the bottom of the 11th to Rafael Furcal that will send the series back to Houston tied. (Hmm, maybe I shouldn't have spoken so quickly about how much I liked the Astros to make it past the first round.) Depth counts for something, and that's possibly encouraging news for the Dodgers.
Update: Atlanta played the game under protest because the bullpen phone in the dugout didn't work. Presumably they'll drop the protest now that the game's gone their way.
