Nutshell Review: Ted Williams: The Biography Of An American Hero

Ted Williams: A Biography of an American Hero, by Leigh Montville.

I've been listening to this as a book-on-CD during my morning commute, and what a tale it is: Williams, the perfect hitter on the field, and perfect jerk off it to his wives, children, and stepchildren; generous with money, and surprisingly, with his time with sick children in hospitals, he was demanding, profane, and naive all at once. A wartime hero in Korea (he managed to land his burning fighter, damaged by enemy fire, without injury to himself), he inflamed public opinion when he attempted to evade the draft in the early hours of World War II. A rich, contrasting biography, written by a huge Williams fan.

Incidentally: the CD has another good property: it seems to make time spent in traffic go by much faster. Wholeheartedly recommended.
