Angels Sign Byrd

In a continuing attempt to sign every nearly-washed-up veteran starter available (not to mention finding a replacement for Aaron Sele), Ken Rosenthal reports that the Angels have signed RHP Paul Byrd; dollars and years currently unknown. Byrd was most recently on the Atlanta Braves, where he had a 3.94 ERA in 114 IP, and an 8-7 record in 19 starts. His 2004 6.22 K/9 is a personal record for years with more than 50 IP. He does manage unusually good control, with a 4.16 K/BB rate, also a personal best. It's the hits that kill him (9.68 H/9). Like a lot of Leo Mazzone's protegés, I have to be skeptical of his ability to pitch in neutral parks (Turner Field is a pitcher's park), in the American League (with the DH), and with the lesser lights of pitching instruction. As much as I like Buddy Black, the results in Anaheim Stadium point to him being a B-grade instructor.

Back when I wrote my postseason NL pitching writeups, I found that Byrd had a bone spur he was healing up. We now get to find out whether he's healthy again.

Rosenthal also says the Angels are trying to trade Jarrod Washburn.

Comments:
I believe the last time he pitched a full season, before his injury was with K.C. Check out his stats, not bad in a hitters park, except for HRS allowed.

Good 4th or 5th starter, especially if the $ are right (2-3 mil per yr.).

Washburn should be gone by trade or non-tendered and sign Clement.

$4.5 million for one year ...

And it's Ramon Ortiz who gets traded, today at least.
