Pickoff Moves

More Refinements On The Rule 5 Draft

Today in the Times, we learn that, in addition to those losses reported yesterday, the Dodgers also acquired RHP Kelly Wunsch as a minor league free agent. Wunsch had a 2.42 K/BB and 9.46 K/9 rates for the Charlotte Knights (White Sox AAA), pretty decent numbers. Also, The Fourth Outfielder has more on D.J. Houlton, the disappeared, and Kelly Wunsch.

DePo Pessimistic About Hudson

From that same Times article, the Dodgers are not the frontrunners to acquire Tim Hudson, according to Paul DePodesta, with the Orioles and the Braves both mentioned as suitors. Since the Orioles have twigs and berries in their minors, we can read this as the Braves nabbing the brass ring.

In(to) Clement, Whether...

Everybody in the universe is hot for former Cub RHP Matt Clement. Now that Pavano has signed, the bidding for remaining pitching has heated up, and the Angels might be out:
Clement's timeline for a decision, though, won't change.

"We're way down the line with some teams, and we don't want to start the process over," Axelrod said. "If you're in, be quick. We're not going to drag this on."

Axelrod began soliciting "final offers" from the finalists Monday night, a process that could be completed today. He spoke by phone with Angel General Manager Bill Stoneman and believes the Angels will sweeten their offer.

Then again …

"I usually don't get involved in bidding wars," Stoneman said. "We take our best shot, and if it doesn't work out, we move on."

Yan Terms Revealed

The Times story above shows Esteban Yan signed for two years and $2.25M. Seems awfully expensive for what we're getting.

Schilling To Miss Spring Training

Looks like Curt Schilling's ankle injury will cause him to miss spring training. He would not commit to a return date.

Comments:
The O's may not have much down on the farm, but they do have Erik Bedard and Brian Roberts in the bigs.

Pitching quality is not additive: two mediocre pitchers do not equal one great pitcher.

Roberts is a 2B, and Bedard is a little better than "mediocre". A 25 year-old lefty with a nearly 11 K/9 ratio in the minors? I'd like to get me some of that!

Those whom the gods would destroy, they first call "promising".

Bedard has pitched predominantly in the Gulf Coast League, the Sally League, and the Independent League, all of which are strong pitcher's leagues. He may be all you suggest, but I'll shave a few points off the top just for skepticism.
