Dodgers Bid Lima, Finley Adieu

The Dodgers let Steve Finley and Jose Lima walk, according to the Times. Adrian Beltre, Brent Mayne, Wilson Alvarez, and Odalis Perez were all offered arbitration.
"This was a tough day for us," General Manager Paul DePodesta said. "We were forced to make decisions because of a deadline without the picture being clear to us. And the pace of those decisions is only going to pick up in coming days. It could reach a frenetic pace."
None of Todd Hundley, Paul Shuey, Hideo Nomo, Robin Ventura, and Jose Hernandez were offered arbitration.
The sum of Finley's and Lima's contributions was not just the line scores, though that is what they pay men like DePo to decode for the rest of us. It's the memories they left behind: the grand slam that erased the Giants from the postseason, and the first postseason win since 1988. These players showed mettle from the moment they came aboard. It wasn't always easy, though, a thought that should keep those in favor of retaining Lima pensive. Nonetheless, it is fitting that we should recognize their contributions, trust that DePodesta has good things up his sleeve, and understand what he's doing by letting them walk. Good luck to you both, gentlemen.
