Frank Buys Up Old Dodger Memorabilia
Frank McCourt has bought a number of items at auction from the 1955 World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers, the only Brooklyn team to win a title.
Travis McCourt, a 21-year-old student at Georgetown University who handled the bidding for the family, made the winning bids for team captain Pee Wee Reese's 14-karat gold 1955 World Championship ring with an accompanying team picture, mounted on a wood plaque, that hung for years in Reese's home (US$72,000); for 1955 game-worn Dodgers jackets from Reese (US$9,000) and pitcher Billy Loes (US$1,680); and an engraved silver platter given to Reese by his 1955 teammates (US$13,200).According to this Reuters report, Travis McCourt, Frank's son, managed the bidding.
"Next season is the 50th anniversary of the 1955 championship and it's very important to us," the Georgetown University senior said. "We're going to bring it all back to Dodger Stadium and do our best to put it all on display. It's all about the heritage and tradition of the team."The auction's principle interest was drawn from the bat Babe Ruth used to inaugurate then-new Yankee Stadium, a piece which fetched a $1.26 million price tag, from an anonymous East Coast collector.
Yahoo has a slide show of some of the items in the auction, principally the Babe Ruth bat.
