Two Games

Royals 8, Angels 3

Orange County Register headline: "Next Pope Must Connect"

Whoever he is, if he does, the Angels might consider hiring him to play third. For starters, Quinlan's forgotten how to hit, which, while not surprising, also isn't too encouraging. Q, bless him, had a nice little 2004, but anyone expecting him to equal that output was squeezing his rosary too hard (read: Bill Stoneman). Of today's starters, Finley, Cabrera, DaVanon (the presumptive DH), and Figgins are all below the Mendoza line.

Did I mention Eckstein is hitting .353 with the Cards? No?

MLB.com headline: "Royals rough up Angels ace to seal series win"

Ace? What ace? Once again, El Ladrón came unglued, giving up six earned runs in six innings, on four hits and two walks. Not once in the entire time he's been with the Angels has he ever looked like an ace. He's an overpaid number two, nothing more.

Last year when last we met the Royals, the Angels could hardly score against them, but then the Royals would botch things in late innings and bleed runs. No gifts today.

The Royals are a last place team. The Angels must beat such teams if they are to contend. This is just unacceptable.

Recap

D'Backs 5, Dodgers 4

I didn't see this one -- I was too busy working on the fence, barely was able to keep up with the Angels game, and then the guys topping my neighbor's tree killed half my dwarf apple tree -- but the last thing the Dodgers needed was a starter on the DL. And when I read that Perez was going to the DL, I just about fainted. Fortunately it was Antonio and not Odalis; and just as fortunately, Lowe's elbow is fine. Whether he'll be able to pitch any time soon is another matter.

Even though I understand the reasons behind unloading Glaus and hoping for the best from McPherson, watching Troy repeatedly take the Dodgers deep -- .280/.333/.920 in 25 AB, and four homers, three against Los Angeles -- well, it's just painful. Damn you, Dallas McPherson and your lousy herniated disc, damn you all to hell!

To answer Jon, no, no dropdown for injuries. Sadly, there is no Javascript for a roulette wheel display item.

Comments:
I feel obligated to point out that if Robb Quinlan were to go 4 for 4 in tomorrow’s game he would be batting a robust .300.

You’re absolutely correct in diagnosing Q’s 2004 as an outlier. That much was obvious while he was still in the process of putting up that amazing .344/.401/.525 line. Quinlan just isn’t going to be a guy who posts .900+ OPS’s, and no one is realistically expecting him to be - not even Bill Stoneman. Otherwise he would have penciled Q into the starting lineup from the beginning, no?

I guess. I'm still cranky from the loss. It's so obvious that Stoneman was thinking McPherson is going to have that kind of a year, and for him to miss most of ST from a herniated disc -- grr. You want to be a pro ballplayer, you do the damn exercises.
