Pickoff Moves
Twins 5, Dodgers 3
Is every day Jackie Robinson Day, Derek? Maybe it's actually his older brother Mack Robinson. Whatever, this one was doubly painful for the absence of men on base when Dodgers homered as it was for the uninspired pitching. Lowe, normally a sinkerball pitcher, continued with the May problems of giving up dingers (three this month vs four in May). Cesar Izturis's hamstring injury didn't help; he's listed day-to-day for now.OT: I Feel The Earth Move
... under my feet, with apologies to Carole King. Was it good for you, too?Choi Hoon Book?
I meant to say something about this earlier, but does this or does this not look like a book offer to you? It's too much to hope for him to translate this to English, but he could definitely sell a few copies.Update: I somehow missed this New York Times editorial featuring Hoon's cartoons (hat tip: Illo Watch), including this brilliant translation of some of his pieces.
We Could Be Heroes: Tales From The Angels Minors
Sorry to make this an Angels-only report, but I'm pressed a little for time this morning (started this run at about quarter after eight, and only now getting it out the door). More on the Dodgers minors later on.- Brian Specht, once upon a time Baseball America's third-rated Angels prospect, has returned after back surgery and is duly tearing up the PCL in short service with the Stingers, hitting an eye-popping .429/.512/.800 in 35 AB.
- Another Stinger, Nick Gorneault, continues to do well with a .316/.370/.587 line. He exploded for 5 RBI and 2 HR in a doubleheader game against the Sacramento Rivercats Tuesday (box).
- Incredibly, Kevin Gregg has posted a 1.06 ERA in 17 IP. I hear the 4A crickets chirping...
- "Thank you for calling the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, I'm sorry Jered Weaver is not pitching today": Jered Weaver has thrown a simulated game and could make his first professional start on the road. So far, the biggest problem he's created is the tieups at the Quakes switchboard, with everyone and his brother asking when he's gonna start.
- For the Travs, Alberto Callaspo (.322/.379/.424), surprise Reggie Willits (.318/.395/.411), and Mike Napoli (.297/.495/.526) are all doing just dandy. I'm especially impressed with catcher Napoli's spread between his OBP and average.
- The Crime Of Orlando Cabrera: Kendry Morales may get all the ink -- and why not? He's hitting .360/.417/.570, and just this week had three consecutive games in which he homered. But 2B Howie Kendrick is actually outslugging Morales (.363/.403/.633), mostly due to a larger number of triples (4) and doubles (11). But the club's home run leader is 2003 first-round pick SS Brandon Wood (.308/.357/.644) with nineteen. Add caveats for this being the hitter-friendly Cal League after all.
