All-Star Votes In

According to ESPN, Cesar Izturis, who has led the voting at shortstop for the National League at one time, has been surpassed by former Angel David Eckstein. Izturis has made the team as a reserve. Jeff Kent will start at second base.

Update: I guess this strategy didn't work.

In the American league, Vlad will start in right field. Bartolo Colon will make the team as a reserve, as will Garret Anderson (who made the team on the players' ballot).

The starting lineups are:

American League
Pos.Player
1BMark Teixeira
2BBrian Roberts
SSMiguel Tejada
3BAlex Rodriguez
CJason Veritek
DHDavid Ortiz
OFManny Ramirez
OFVladimir Guerrero
OFJohnny Damon
National League
Pos.Player
1BDerek Lee
2BJeff Kent
SSDavid Eckstein
3BScott Rolen
CMike Piazza
OFJim Edmonds
OFBobby Abreu
OFCarlos Beltran

Notice the appearance of the washed-up Piazza and the so-far ineffective-in-the-NL Beltran. If you want to know why I'm not impressed by the All-Star game, this is it. Whatever.

Comments:
Two things are silly, IMHO...

1) the assumption that the All-Star game should reward first half performance only and...

2) blasting fan selection for a voting system open to every abuse imaginable.

If they followed Bill James' solution to the fan voting, it would generate a lot more interest. Shorter James: sectional voting which lead to analysis of which section made the best selections.
