No Broom: Angels 5, A's 2

I have this recurring fear that the A's are really just dormant, and they'll never be truly bad, not for any extended period of time; that they lost so many games early to me just meant they were going to go on a tear later on. And so it was; since May 30, as they kept reminding us on the radio broadcast, they're the best team in baseball with a 30-12 record, including tonight's loss. (Sorry Vishal, no broom necessary or possible.)

I guess I should look at tonight as a positive for Santana; he really held up well and dominated the A's for the most part, except for Eric Chavez, who he walked twice. He definitely wasn't giving Chavez anything to hit, that's for sure, but that certainly played into the A's strategy. If Chavez had anything resembling protection -- and Scott Hatteberg really doesn't qualify anymore -- Santana would have had a far different result.

Be that as it may, Ervin managed to pull out seven innings and two earned runs with six K's, a respectable outing by any standards. The scary part is next Saturday, when he faces Kevin Brown.

Vlad's troubles at the plate continue, though you can see life in his swings. But you can really see a marked improvement in Finley's bat. Yes, he only went 1-3 with a walk, but one of those outs was a hard-hit liner. And leave it to Anderson to go 2-4 against the A's. It's always useful to have a guy who rakes against your chief division rival. Also, Cabrera's well-timed single helped immensely. In the "not yet in trouble, but it's troubling anyway" department, Adam Kennedy's 1-12 slide over his last four games isn't making me sleep better at night.

A really good game at a really good time. Still don't trust these A's to stay down at the bottom of the division.
