19952: A's 5, Angels 4

It's 1995 all over again. A really hot start, followed by a big lead blown in the second half.

Good starting pitching followed by a giveaway that exposes the Angels' shallow bullpen, not to mention just plain lousy play, all accompanied by managerial inattention to detail are all combining to run this team into the ground. You may recall that I predicted a bullpen collapse this year, and boy has it. But it's not just the bullpen that's exploded: credit Orlando Cabrera for booting a ball in critical games in nearly every series where the Angels had the lead. His defense is simply atrocious and getting worse by the day, it seems.

Today's loss, though, was just pathetic, and one in a long series of games featuring crappy play, and this time there was no 18-inning marathon game the night or weekend before to excuse it. The bullpen -- except for Shields, who continues to get overworked -- was fairly well rested.

Donnelly is no longer trustworthy, and shouldn't have faced the top of the A's order.

Somebody needs to kick some ass over there. Unfortunately, Scioscia isn't the man to do it.

Update: Some good commentary on this at Pearly Gates:

Recap

Comments:
Actually, I thought Harden did pretty well in the first game; he just got some bad breaks in the first couple innings and left one where Vlad could get to it low. He shut down the Angels every inning thereafter, and they didn't threaten him much.

The A's traded for those arms in the postseason, having learned from their experience at the hands of the Angels. I can't say Stoneman did anything like the same.

Despite losing the series, as an Angel fan this series provided many positive aspects. It is only August 11th. Given that GA was on the bench for the last two games, Shields had an uncharacteristic blowup in game two, uncharacteristic errrors by a great defense, during the stretch runs these will not be an issue.
Positives 1: Phenomenal starting pitching {Lackey, Santana and Byrd 19 innings, 1 ER} 2: Vlad is back, injury concerns asides, he is getting back is stride
Concerns 1: mental lapses {obannon, frankie, etc. these players do not have a history of such mistakes in key situations} 2: offense other than Vlad {Finley still belongs on the bench...} 3: Relief other than Frankie and Shields 4: Clutch hitting

All aside, concerns 1, 3, 4 are only recent, and should sort themselves out, yet the offense must show more consistency.

The bullpen is shallow now and was going into the season. If the Angels have this rotation in 2003, they're looking at another ride to the postseason, maybe, or at the very least a winning season.

Hey, our guy stole home pretty well when he needed to...

Interestingly, in Joe Morgan's ESPN chat today, he blames the Rodriguez play on the 2B and SS not backing up the pitcher.

Not to whore my blog out or anything, but I make my case for leaving Santana in the rotation and moving Escobar to the pen here.

Oops, that was supposed to be in response to Daniel's comment.

No, Escobar has to go back to the rotation. Santana has to go back to AAA. Everyone's solid right now and I don't think it would do Ervin any good to play reliever.

yes the angel bull pen is thin and overwork but vlad can't do it himself anderson is slumping or hurt. there is no glaus or guillen to take up the slack when you have to hit b. molina fift that must tell you something caberra has been a disappointment offense and defense at least ekstien made the routine plays even though it doesn't have the arm or range of orlando yes second and short should have been backing up the throw from the catcher but who does that anymore? anyway it wasn't the catcher it was frankie he should have had that ball good teams don't make mistakes like that, the angel pitchers shouldn't have to throw a shut out ever time out, thereis no hitting from the dh finley is having a bad year they expected more from quinlin mcphertson hasn't arrived i think the angels will make the playoffs but won't go far because of the reasons i have stated

It's unlikely that Ervin Santana goes back to AAA as Escobar leaving the DL. The minor league season ends at the end of August, and Escobar may not be ready at that time.
