Minor League Scorebook

Angels recap tomorrow morning; suffice to say I'm just wowed by Kotchman's sudden firepower and assume it's a fluke.

2005-08-07: Memphis 10, Salt Lake 8

Prieto: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Callaspo, A: 1-5, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 0-4, 1 RBI
Sorensen: 2-5, 1 RBI
Gordon: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Specht: 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Smith, C: 2-4
Saunders: (L, 2-3), 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 9 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 4.35 ERA
Woods: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 6.92 ERA
Remember Brian Specht? Stephen Smith rated him the tenth best prospect in the Angels system back in 2002, but a damaged shoulder labrum derailed his career. He came back to AAA Salt Lake last year and hit a woeful .237/.306/.358 in only 190 AB. This year, he's blazing hot again, with a .325/.391/.518 line and a current 15-game hitting streak. The team officially lists him as a shortstop, though he played third in Saturday's game. I'm not sure about the rules, but I believe he could be a minor league free agent at the end of this season, and given how stacked the Angels are up the middle, I'd have to believe he'll go elsewhere.
2005-08-07: Arkansas did not play
Update 8/8: Stephen Smith has posted a new John Sickels analysis of the players currently at Arkansas based on his recent trip to Wichita. He's not quite as high on Mike Napoli as some have been, saying he's got a long uppercut swing that tends to strike out a good bit; but he places him in the Oakland power-and-patience philosophy. About Kendry Morales, Sickels seems to think he's still very raw, unable to hit anything but fastballs, and consistently fooled by (or laying off of) breaking pitches, the kind of philosophy that will get him killed once he sees pitchers who have reasonable control of same. He also says Morales "has NO speed at all, and lacks mobility around the bag", making him look like a DH prospect more than anything else. As David Ortiz showed, those can have value if they hit well enough, and the Angels have benefited almost not at all this year from the DH position.
2005-08-07: Inland Empire 11, Rancho Cucamonga 3
Peel, A: 3-5
Wood, B: 0-5
McPherson: 0-0
Brown: 2-2
Day: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Posey: (L, 0-1), 3.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 4 BB, 7.71 ERA
MacKenzie: 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 5.97 ERA
DeLoizaga-Carney: 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 6.43 ERA
D-Mac's line requires a little more explanation. He actually reached base twice, once on a walk and once on a hit by pitch; he subsequently made an out trying to steal second, and was replaced defensively in the fifth, which I take to mean he was given plane tickets to Salt Lake.

Pretty gruesome start for Micah Posey, who made his first high-A start this year in this game; it's unclear why they called him up from Mesa, though I expect the general organizational pitching shortage forced a few hands and his was one. His previous record was generally undistinguished, though he had a nice little half season for Cedar Rapids last year with a 0.99 WHIP but a 5.74 K/9. Guys like that get killed at higher levels; you have to be able to induce strikeouts.

2005-08-07: Cedar Rapids 2, Wisconsin 6
Collins: 2-4, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 0-4
Madrigal: 1-4
Rodriguez, S: 0-3
Giannotti: 2-3
Rodriguez, F: (L, 6-8), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 4.34 ERA
Fernando Rodriguez is the other side of the Micah Posey coin: a guy who can strike out a ton of batters but surrenders hits and walks left and right (94 K's, 124 H, 42 BB, 118.1 IP). His ERA is a fair reflection of the player so far. But all that said, it was a very good night for Sr. Rodriguez.
2005-08-07: AZL Angels 2, AZL Cubs 11 (missing line score)
Edwards: 2-5
Harper: 2-4
Espinoza: (L, 4-2), 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 3.17 ERA
Update 8/8: Ouch. An incredibly sloppy game with Espinoza on the mound, four errors led to three unearned runs on top of his three earned runs, with four unearned runs overall. A very poor showing for Mesa in this one.

I wonder who the 12 in attendance were, and whether it included the MLB scorer.

2005-08-07: Orem 5, Casper 6
Coon: 2-4, 1 RBI
Statia: 2-5
Trumbo: 2-4, 1 RBI
Reilly: 2-4
Arredondo: 3.2 IP, 5 ER, 10 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 6.18 ERA
Pete: 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1.26 ERA
Cruz Chavez: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 4.91 ERA
Improbably, Mike Pete continues to do well. (I wrote about him a little back on July 24.) Only 12 IP, so don't hold your breath.
2005-08-07: Las Vegas 6, Omaha 7
Young, D: 0-4
Grabowski: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Myrow: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Nixon: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Osoria: (L, 5-3) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.37 ERA
Forget the loss -- Osoria is having a damn good time pitching in Vegas. However, what worries me is his inherited runners scoring, which I don't have good access to at the moment.
2005-08-07: Jacksonville 5, Mobile 3
Abreu, T: 2-4, 1 RBI
Loney: 0-4
Ruggiano, J: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Guzman, J: 0-2
Hanrahan: (W, 7-7), 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 5.18 ERA
Kuo: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.53 ERA
2005-08-07: Vero Beach 9, Palm Beach 3
Hu: 1-6
Rohan: 3-4, 2 RBI
Kemp: 2-5, 2 RBI
Dunlap: 3-4, 2 RBI
Raglani: 3-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Denker, T: 0-4
Ellis: 2-3
Ojeda: (W, 5-1), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 2.78 ERA
I've written a little about Anthony Raglani before; he's quietly putting together some good numbers at Vero, and tonight's game was an exclamation point.

Alvis has left the building: You've gotta figure Alvis Ojeda's luck is gonna run out sooner or later. Despite his good ERA, his 31/20 K/BB ratio isn't so good, and giving up 33 hits in 49 IP isn't getting the job done eventually.

2005-08-07: Savannah 4, Columbus 6
Carter, B: 0-2, 2 BB
Nicholson: 1-2, 3 BB, 1 RBI
Dewitt: 1-4, 2 RBI
Pedroza: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Russ: 2-4
Elbert: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 3.13 ERA
O'Flaherty: (W, 3-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 4.74 ERA
2005-08-07: GCL Dodgers did not play
2005-08-07: Ogden 6, Idaho Falls 7
Soto: 2-5, 4 RBI
Mitchell: 0-3, 3 BB
Mooneyham: 3-4, 1 RBI
Richmond: 2-6
Apodaca: 0-4, 2 BB
Justis: 2-3, 2 BB
Leach: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 3.04 ERA
Krise: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 0.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 9.82 ERA
