Scratch The Rest Excuse: Angels 7, Orioles 6
Frankie Rodriguez, a bomb after three days? Well, if it's causative, the absence of three days' rest isn't the issue. Some think his confidence is shot after the New York meltdown, the "where's the ball" screwup in Oakland, and now getting booed in Anaheim; as a result, he's not going after guys hard anymore. To make it all worse, the Times is publishing stories that would seem to indicate his extant stuff no longer suffices. Me, I think he's just plain tired from Venezuelan winter ball plus having what is the absolutely the roughest month of his career to date. Hopeful press releases to the contrary, his invulnerability has come apart in a big hurry this month, with a 4.79 ERA in August and an 0-1 record with a blown save. It is, surprisingly, not the worst month of his career; that was his 5.40 ERA in April 2003. If this team harbors any hopes of the postseason, he needs to pull himself together, and quick.
All this obscures the fine job Washburn did, and the relief corps outside of Gregg, who reverted to the frog form that required Scioscia to call in Frankie. Shields is tiring also, and he wasn't nearly as sharp as he can be.
Juan Rivera had a 4-5 night, which was a good thing because both Vlad and GA seem to have returned to slumping, and at the same time no less. Quinlan came up and contributed, too, and how sweet was that? Minus Finley, this team can actually hit.
