- Nick Gorneault was named PCL Player of the Week:
Gorneault, 26, from Springfield, Mass., scored 13 runs, belted four homers, collected 14 RBI, had two doubles, a triple and a .400 average on the week to finish the season at .293 with 26 homers and a League-leading 108 RBI. He was originally drafted in the 19th round of the 2001 free agent draft by the then-Anaheim Angels.
The Pacific Coast League, established in 1903, celebrates a milestone season in which it surpassed the 7-Million fan mark on way to set a new attendance plateau at nearly 7.35 million.
- Conveniently enough, it looks like MILB.com is providing game data for the postseason games just like they did for regular season games. This means I can extend the life of the Minor League Scorebook a bit longer. Good stuff.
- Update: It appears I missed an interesting exchange that my coworker Ray brought to my attention today. It seems that Nick Gorneault's grand slam in Friday's game was precipitated by a pair of intentionally hit batters, Alberto Callaspo and Casey Smith, both by 51's pitcher Alfredo Gonzalez. Gonzalez was retaliating for a stolen base by Chris Prieto in the sixth, when the Stingers were already up 8-1. The umpire ejected Gonzalez, and Buddy Carlyle came in to surrender the grand slam. Unbelievable.
