Two Games
Nothing's Shocking: Red Sox 6, Angels 3
The Angels play the Red Sox, and the Angels lose. Over, and over, and over. There's nothing new here, is there? A weak bullpen, Santana unable to get it done on the road, lousy offense, an allegedly bad call (I didn't see it) that got Scioscia ejected, but the capper was "centerfielder" Jeff DaVanon failing to make a good break for a popup that dropped.
And let's not forget to ask why Robb Quinlan wasn't in this lineup, and Chone Figgins in center. DaVanon has little offensive value anymore; if there were ever a case to be made for getting rid of him, now's the time.
The Game I Lost: Dodgers 9, Giants 8
I admit it: I didn't care. By the time the Giants had pasted eight runs on the board, four of them against the recent Dodger hero Elmer Dessens, I figured this game was over. A Sunday School softball league has a better bullpen than the Dodgers, and probably better hitting. And then I saw the recap on the news. Mike Edwards turned into a hero on a bases-loaded single? Oscar Robles homered?
It's a funny game.
And the .872 ZR (in 124 2/3 innings in CF this year; .881 career) does not exactly support the notion that DaVanon should not play the position.
