Roster Notes
- The Angels and Royals are still thinking about a Sweeney trade, with the Royals demanding Brandon Wood and Casey Kotchman. Is there some reason this is even being thought about?
- The Angels will offer arbitration to Paul Byrd, a no-brainer now that he has a contract with Cleveland, and to Bengie Molina, but not Jarrod Washburn.
- Hal-le-lujah! The Red Sox have inquired about Orlando Cabrera, and are themselves considering moving shortstop Edgar Rentaria to Atlanta. If this happens, the Angels could sign Rich Aurilia.
- Regarding the three-way with the Diamondbacks sending Troy Glaus to the Red Sox, and Manny Ramirez back to the Angels, the Diamondbacks are now asking for Scot Shields.
Update: Randy Youngman of the Register warns Bill Stoneman to just say no to Ramirez because of the cost in prospects. I agree.
- The Angels are supposedly also interested in Matt Morris, who's also being pursued by the Dodgers, Mariners, Giants, and Nationals.
- Jason Grabowski has signed with the Orix Buffaloes in the Japanese leagues.
- The Padres are back in it in the on-again, off-again pursuit of David Wells.
- The Mariners have offered Jamie Moyer a one-year, $3M deal, which is said to be far less than he wants. The southpaw wants to stay in Seattle, but the club isn't likely to offer the 43 year old arbitration.
- The Dodgers dodged a bullet by failing to acquire speedy-but-OBP-challenged Juan Pierre; the Cubs took that bullet for them, sending Sergio Mitre and two prospects.
- MLB.com reports that the Dodgers have emerged as Manny suitors, but tell me, with Theo Epstein applying his thumb athwart his nose, fingers waving like wheat in the wind toward Frank, what might Manny's reaction be?
- The Mariners' Gil Meche could end up in Cincinnati, though the M's are likely to non-tender him.
- The Mets are increasingly serious about acquiring Barry Zito, and will probably have to give up Lastings Milledge to do it.
- The Mariners are in talks with Carl Everett, supposedly to do something about their offense, but is a guy with a .435 SLG in a hitter's park the answer?
Comments:
Regarding OC, why would we sign Aurilia when we have 2 SS prospects waiting in the minors. Let Chone play SS until they are ready.
I think it's interesting that the Dodgers are mentioned in connection with just about every possible trade or free agent signing available. Is Coletti really this busy -- Ramirez, Soriano, Garciaparra, Wells, Morris, etc. -- and is McCourt really this open with his checkbook? Or is this some sort of PR spin to improve the owner's image by making us think they're willing to spend whatever it takes to win? I'm skeptical.
Offering arbitration to Byrd, Bengie and Washburn should be no-brainers.
The reason for offering arbitration to Bengie and Washburn is the same: if they accept, the Angels get a one-year rental of a very useful player. If they decline, the Angels get a draft pick or two (for Bengie).
I hope the report is wrong about not offering arbitration to Washburn.

I think Aurilia would fill the super-sub role that Figgins currently has, freeing up Figgy to play SS.
The best Angel article of the day appeared in the Riverside Press Enterprise (www.pe.com). It seems the Angels are . . . unlikely to obtain a big bat due to Stoneman's unwillingness to give up prospects; are more likely to obtain a pitcher; and, in very good news, will probably move Erstad back to center to make way for Kotchman. Be sure to read it.
