Pickoff Moves
Dodgers 16, (ss) Mets 2
Andy LaRoche capped an 11-run sixth inning with a grand slam. Grady Little:I think the label put on this kid ... is that he's a gamer. He's not really a guy who is going to light up your eyes during batting practice or defensive drills. But once the game starts, he really puts on a show. All things considered, LaRoche has a pretty mellow view of his future:
"My mindset right now is just to learn as much as I can from these big leaguers while I'm here, hopefully play as well as I can and try to make a good impression," LaRoche said. "After that, I'll let the pieces fall where they may.Derek Lowe posted three scoreless innings against a woefully depleted Mets squad; Odalis Perez did the same in one inning of work."If they send me to Jacksonville, fine. If they send me to (Triple-A Las) Vegas, fine. I would like to think that if I play the way I'm capable of and play hard every day, sometime this year, hopefully, I'll get to the big leagues. But if not, that's fine. It's whatever they need me to do to help the team."
A's 8, Angels 5
Is Bob Zimmermann still a prospect? It's possible, but he won't be doing anything against major leaguers any time soon, given his four runs in one inning on Sunday. Ah, no matter: the kids are all right:"I don't go out of my way to talk to anybody, but if they make conversation with me I might try to get in some questions," Adenhart said.No matter, indeed, as Joe Saunders got in an inning of scoreless relief, and Kevin Gregg, who's hoping against hope he can earn the last bullpen slot over Esteban "Hit My Fastball" Yan -- who showed up to camp overweight, though he's "throwing the ball better than he had at any point last year" according to Mike Scioscia. The Angels are so far saying that Yan's contract guarantees him nothing -- $1.25M isn't enough to keep him on the team, especially since Kevin Gregg is out of options.
Casey Kotchman blasted a three-run dinger off journeyman Jason Karnuth. The Angels are 3-1 in spring training.
Injuries And Other Roster Notes
- John Lackey's shoulder is better, and if Lackey can start work off the mound early this week, he should be okay for the regular season.
- Rafael Furcal is a week away from competing.
- How stupid is this: the Cubs are letting Kerry Wood throw off a mound one day before his scheduled knee surgery. Angels physician Dr. Lewis Yokum will be doing the honors.
- David Wells has rescinded his trade request. He had earler requested to be traded to a team on the West Coast.
- Seattle starter Gil Meche strained an oblique muscle while pitching, an injury that isn't expected to be major, though U.S.S. Mariner says Meche will be out "indefinitely".
