Minor League Scorebook
News
- Not without reason, the public calls for the punishment of Delmon Young have been consistent and loud. Steven Goldman in today's Baseball Prospectus ($$) tells us that it's needed essentially for the integrity of the game; let Young off the hook, and we open the door to what the game was prior to the ability of umpires to eject players, a game where enforcement of the rules is subject to the ability of the players, management, and fans to intimidate the officials. Then there's Kevin T. Czerwinski at MILB.com, who recommends the IL toss Young for the balance of the season. A good idea.
- Minor league umpires voted down the latest contract proposal, so the strike goes on. As Bob Timmermann observed, "[t]here is no word on whether or not the umpires wanted additional pay for working games that Delmon Young plays in."
- The weekly notebooks are out for the PCL (Bees, 51's), the Texas League (Travelers), the Cal League (Quakes), the Southern League (Suns), the Florida State League (Dodgers), and the Sally League (Catfish).
- Aaron Sele was named PCL Pitcher of the Week following his string of 12.2 scoreless innings last week. Similarly, in a piece of good news for the Catfish (who could use some — they're 2-5 over the last week), Brent Leach struck out 14 of 15 outs he made while surrendering zero earned runs over 5.0 IP. The effort won the Sally League's Pitcher of the Week award.

Moseley: (W, 4-1), 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 4 BB, 3.21 ERA
I'd forgotten these guys were going to see each other again this soon. Somehow Moseley got another start after pitching only one inning on Saturday's rainout. Guess what: he wasn't terrible, although given what the 51's were putting out there, that doesn't say too much about his future, especially not with that low strikeout total and all those hits and walks.

Offensively, Mike Napoli did his three-true-outcomes thing over the fence, while Dallas McPherson got the night off against righty Juarez. Salt Lake apparently snuffed out a Las Vegas rally in the fourth with a line drive to Kendry Morales that turned into a triple play when he threw to second, where CF Jon Weber caught Delwyn Young off the bag.

Fernando Rodriguez didn't make it out of the fifth and generally got shelled; Joe Torres, returning from injury, looks to be still injuring the team with those numbers. Ouch.

A fargin' shelling of South Bend by Cedar Rapids; Mosebach had a pretty good outing, fanning six through eight innings. South Bend made three errors, and two of the Kernels' runs were unearned.

Delwyn Young had a pair of homers; in an earlier version of this post, I incorrectly said he was the team leader in home runs, but that honor actually belongs to Willy Aybar, with six. (The comment in the MILB.com game wrap was unclear.) Bad news for Kuo, who's walking batters in Vegas, too.

Miller: (H, 2), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
I can't tell if this is a duplex start using a pair of relievers or if West Tennessee starter Randy Wells got chased after three innings (and only one earned run). Whatever, Matt Kemp had one of the best offensive days he's had in a while, ending a single short of the cycle and extending his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. A.J. Zapp and Justin Ruggiano, both a couple guys just below my threshold for making the watchlist, went 3-4.

Comments:
The HR counter on the box score is screwed up, then. And, I got fooled by this passage in the game wrap:
Young homered to center off Wilhite in the ninth and finished 2-for-4 to lead the 51s (16-9), who have dropped two of three.

Looks like an impressive outing for Greg Miller - 3 IP, ERA still at 0.00. Maybe we'll see him in L.A. soon?
15 innings and no earned runs -- I overlooked that. He's doing well, but his injury history tells me they'll want to keep him in the minors for a while. He also got knocked around pretty hard in spring training last year (9.00 ERA, in limited service, 3.0 IP), and even worse this year (11.25 ERA, 4.0 IP). ST doesn't tell you much, necessarily, but I'd be willing to be they go with him later in the season. If he can keep this up, maybe sooner.
