Minor League Scorebook
News
- Eric Gagné worked a save for Las Vegas tonight following a huge 51's rally, after which Dr. Gagné declared himself ready for major league action. This has Jon understandably nervous, because Gagné used words like "it was just a bad landing" to explain his unhappiness with his control. He has a history of being too brave in the face of injuries that should keep him on the sidelines; we'll have to see how much Grady Little has learned since Pedro Martinez told him he was just fine in the 2003 ALCS.

Another great night by Howie Kendrick, as well as another brilliant outing by Joe Saunders, who had blanked Las Vegas through seven... and then the eight-run eighth. Jason Bulger turned into a pumpkin, and then Chris Bootcheck couldn't hold on to the lead, either, giving up two runs, one earned. A really embarrassing game for the Bees bullpen, who hit two batters in the inning, one of them with the bases loaded, scoring a run. Jeff Mathis was also redfaced in that inning, allowing a passed ball. SS Casey Smith helped to extend the inning by throwing away a ball to first on a grounder by Joel Guzman. A terrible game for the Bees.

Update 5/30: Nick Gorneault got an RBI single; he has driven in a run in ten straight games, matching a franchise record. Gorneault leads the team in RBIs at 40, and if the Angels are serious about promoting guys based on their RISP and RISP2 numbers, it makes you wonder just how seriously they take that idea within the front office.

I wonder if we didn't get a sing of it yesterday. Penny was hurt, struggling and wanted to be a warrior but Grady pulled him anyway. It's a win-win for both skipper and player, IMHO. It's the anti-Pedro move and hopefully a message from Grady that if your hurt and can't get it done--or you're risking further injury--we've got someone else who can do the job.
Of course, this might change dramatically in the post-season, provided we get there.
(notice how I said "we", Rob? We still think of you as one of us, even though we know better.)

You wonder what a guy like Nick Gorneault has to do to get a chance. It seems like there are certain players considered prospects and others that are considered only for bench roles. I bet Gorneault would be more productive than Anderson if he played regularly.

That's interesting. I recall hearing that Tim Salmon was considered less of a prospect because he has a funny stance (looks like he's sitting on a chair).

Grady Little pulling Brad Penny before he pitched long enough to qualify for the win reminded me of a game where Angel manager Terry Collins pulled Tim Belcher one out short of a win.
That was in the 28 April 1999 Toronto @ Anaheim game. The pitching match-up was David Wells vs Tim Belcher. In 2.1 innings Wells was lit up for 7 hits and 7 runs, 6 earned as the Halos jumped out to a 10-0 lead. In the 5th inning Belcher surrendered 6 runs all earned before being pulled. In 4.2 innings Belch gave up 9 hits and 6 runs. Toronto rallied to tie the game 10-10 in the 7th. The Angels saved the bacon by scoring 2 in the 8th to win 12-10.
The manager's job is to get his team the win. The heck with getting a win for the starting pitcher or a save for the closer. Those are less meaningful statistics. When the pitcher is turning the scoreboard into a popcorn machine it is time to pull him. Collins and Little were both correct in these 5th inning pulls of starting pitchers.
